Orca Photos and Links in the News

It's been very quiet for sightings in this central stretch of Georgia Strait. There are whales in the South, just across the US border, and there were reports that some Northern Resident Killer Whales were just at the top of Johnstone Strait. The I31's may have coaxed the A8's with the new calf to leave our area and join them heading West, but there hasn't been confirmation of this. With calm waters and not as much fog, they should be easier to spot, so keep your eyes open.

Sperm Whales adopt a Bottlenose Dolphin with a spinal deformity:

Another white Humpback Whale was spotted off Norway. It's interesting to see that the all white whale has black and white markings on the tail flukes. They've called this one Willow.

The original white Humpback Whale who has been seen numerous times around Australia is known as Migaloo. The clip is worth repeating.

Migaloo is also thought to have sired an all white calf:

Sticking with all white whales: Although there have been no recent sightings, there was also one all white Orca photographed off the Aleutian Islands.

Orca Sightings, Fog and Links in the News

Fog limited any viewing of the ocean let alone any whales or dolphins most of this past week. There are a couple of Orca sightings reports and a few more photos received late of the Northern Resident Pod known as the A8's and A42's December calf off Harwood Island. My husband, son, uncle and myself I were out on our boat today and saw what I think is the newborn orca that was born in Powell River. We were going along the front side of Harwood Island towards the Spit, then turned around to follow them. I was able to take some photos. What an experience. One went on his side and swam right alongside our boat...There were 5 in total. When we left them, they were headed between Harwood and Texada. We went back around the back side and on our way back to the Beach Gardens, and they were swimming around Vivian Island. (This is unconfirmed A8's - SM)

Orca News and Sightings

Orca and Dolphins. Possible sighting of the A8's with the new calf still close to Powell River – Cortez Island area with some other Orca making an appearing / disappearing act, like Transient (Bigg's) tend to do. Without identification, the reports are again under the generic Killer Whales list. A few Pacific White Sided Dolphins have also made a brief appearance.
In the News section below has the reports with updates on the ice trapped Orca and the dead Orca calf.

January 9:
10:15 am Spotted 3 female Orca Northbound off Westview, Powell River so grabbed gear and hopped in boat to see if I could find them. It is a big ocean, and they just vanished. Spent a couple of hours searching. Even the flat calm waters had only a few ripples from seals and birds. I dropped the hydrophone in a few times and thought I heard some distant vocals, but the ferries and other boat noise made it impossible to distinguish clearly.

January 8:
1:30 pm Working on Hernando Island we saw 3 Orca, a big dorsal, smaller one and a calf with some orange colouring on it (sign of newborns - SM). They came right up to the shore and were rolling around and looked like they were rubbing on the beach by Dog Bay. There was possibly a fourth, but there were the 3 for sure. It was an awesome show, but we had to leave after 45 minutes. We left them just hanging out in the bay. (Possibly A8's? - SM)

January 9:
A pod of around 12 Orca are trapped in the ice of Hudson's Bay, in Northern Quebec. Rumour had it that an icebreaker has been sent to try to break up the ice for a passage for them. But looking up latest news reports, as at 1 hour of writing this, the DFO has only sent someone “to assess the situation”. No word yet as to the outcome, but reports also state that the extreme cold is causing the hole to shrink. Multiple Pods of Orca in Upper Georgia Strait

There appear to be multiple pods of Killer Whales in the area. The differences in the reports coming in are difficult to sort out as to who is who and where. More Orca reports, both Transient (Bigg's) and Northern Resident sightings, even with some Dolphins. Spectacular photos taken in Lambert Channel, off Chrome Island Lightstation, of the New Year's Transients (Bigg's) punting a very large, heavy Steller sea lion. They weight around 2,000 pounds! Since we have a few groups of whales with calves, and sightings have varied in numbers and big male dorsals seen, the report below is blended with notations as to which are confirmed Resident vs. Transient (Bigg's).
Orca Calf Birth Notes: Northern Residents (NRKW) A8's: A42's calf was confirmed spotted on Dec. 25th off Grief Point, Powell River. On Dec. 20th the calf first spotted off Albion Point (Black Pt.) by Bill Taylor looked like it didn't have much of a dorsal fin at all. This would be typical for a newborn whose dorsal fin would be soft and bent over at birth.

Today at 1:50 pm we had a good sighting in calm waters off Myrtle Rocks in the Malaspina Strait. January 2 Notes:
I had left the A8's at 2:15 pm headed towards Coho Point, so the above whales assumed to be them. From photos received for ID's from Anne Baker, A66 is confirmed in the photo, but there appears to be another Orca in the photo that doesn't fit the A8's – will update when I confirm who. Could just be a weird angle.
Speaking with John Treen, who had given us the heads up on the A8's off Savary, he thought there were possibly 2 other Orca that headed towards Vivian while seeing us with the A8's..... curious.
Someone had said they had seen some Pacific White Sided Dolphins with Orca just off Savary Island – my apologies, but I cannot locate any specifics on the report other than it was stated.

January 1:
I just GOTTA share this....... (photo above) We just got back from 3 days boating (about 40 miles south west of Powell River.......... and we are still in massive AWE....... we happened to be in the perfect place at the right time...... We spied some major splashing about a kilometre away so we raced over to investigate........to find a pod of about 8 -10 (Transient (Bigg's) meat eating) Orcas that had segregated a large sealion and were in the process of overwhelming, confusing, exhausting, disorienting, pummelling, punting and finally drowning to have for dinner........we watched this for about an hour! in our boat (no one else around!) IT WAS AMAZING!! Sad of course for the sealion but that is nature in it's rawest - OMGawd! Words just don't do it justice..... we learned/witnessed how the sealion's safest place and hardest for the whales to get him was on the surface, and it could get it's breath easier there too (even tho we think of them as being good swimmers etc.). The strategy of the orcas by the time we got there was to pummel it and then leave it and swim away for a a couple of minutes and then come back at it again. Multiple times the orcas jumped fully out of the water, were totally circling the sea lion and causing surprisingly large waves........ We were surprised the process took as long and are unsure how long it was to the stage at which we arrived. The Big Daddy huge dorsal fin stayed out of the 'hunt' until the very end. The punt at the end made the sealion look featherweight but typically they are 1000 - 1500 lbs we believe. Then the water finally was eerily calm and the seagulls arrived to scavenge morsels on the surface (we couldn't see anything of uneaten pieces from our position - surprisingly clean/not obvious). Then after only about 2 minutes the orcas appeared again on the surface and then headed elsewhere........! We wonder how often in a day or ? this happens to feed that many orcas. They were totally unbothered by us. IT WAS SOOOO INCREDIBLE! We keep shaking our heads and reliving the video in our minds - WOW WOW WOW! There was also several small rock islands about a 1/2 mile behind us with about 200 sealions on it at the time of this event all yelling at the tops of their lungs! Not the usual sealion bark but all of them crying/ angry/complaining and hoping 'their family member' could survive the ordeal....
What an incredible gift - better than any New Year's Eve fireworks or t.v. show!!

NRKW New Baby Orca Photos and More

What an exciting start to 2013! At least two new Orca calves. Report of one for the Transient (Bigg's) T036's and one for the Northern Resident A8's. Seeing such a tiny calf is always exciting, and being able to photograph them is even better. See the A8's Baby photos below. The orange tinge is typical of newborns.

John Treen, Savary Island

January 2:
Around 11:30 am Thanks to John's call, I found the 5 Orca, photo identified as the A8's, between Savary and Harwood Islands. Definitely a new calf!! From there we came back towards Powell River with the whales looking undecided if they wanted to head towards the ferry terminal or towards Texada Island. Set the hydrophone down a number of times, but they remained quiet throughout. There was possibly a few echolocation clicks, but with ferry and tug noise interfering maybe it was just boat noise. Had they been vocalizing, we would have heard it. The pod stayed close together for the most part, then separated to feed a bit before carrying on towards the Blubber Bay light on Texada. After checking the photos, I could confirm Male A66 born 1996, Female A42 born 1980, Juvenile A79 born 2004, Juvenile A88 born 2008 and the newborn calf which may be a New Year's Baby since it's so tiny. From the A8's, we appear to be missing Female A28 born 1974...

December 28: (late report)
We were on the 4:00 pm ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, on a very cold, rainy, darkening Dec 28th, when about 15 minutes out of the harbor my husband, Den spied a couple of fins. I only caught a dark rippling of the water but the word was "Dolphins". Having just driven from Salmon Arm in the thro's of the flu we didn't pursue further searching out on the deck where I usually spend a good amount of time on the ferry rides. This is the only sighting from the ferry that we have experienced. Can't wait till summer to come north and take a whale watching charter.
Thank You so very much for sending images and reports of the whale & dolphin & porpoise sightings all year. Each image thrills, so you know what the impact of actually seeing in person is for me. This last image of the whales is like a beautiful ballet. (December 31 update – SM) Keep sending images and reports.

Gray Whale Information

I’m actually not surprised to hear you have some errant gray whales up there! I went to a conference a few years ago regarding gray whales (as sentinels of climate change) and was surprised to learn that not all of the whales make the annual migration each year. Researchers listening with hydrophones for bowhead in Alaska discovered gray whales hanging out each winter that never went south. Oregon and Washington both have areas that a small number of gray whales visit each year to feed, instead of heading south.
It turned on its head everything I thought I knew about gray whales! I guess if you don’t “need” to make a 12,000 mile trip, why would you!! I’m sure I’d be happy to hang out with a bunch of friends and have a few snacks, than just go because it’s what everyone else is doing!!
Thanks for keeping us connected with everything going on up there. It’s nice to feel, just for a few minutes a day, we’re up there with you and the whales!
