KC Found, Orca, Still Tons of Humpbacks, Dolphins and Porpoise

This was a nailbiter, but the good news is that one of our favourite Humpback Whales 'KC' was finally found after a couple of days searching and looking back at his track through our Maps Archive for most likely locations to search. Did you realize that you can track animals too?! He was found at one of his most distant locations over the previous week from his entanglement completely free of the floatable poly rope. The bad news is that the prawn trap with these poly lines is floating somewhere out there still. We have another photo of the lines wrapped on KC included below.

There are still a huge number of Humpback Whales, over 20, in the upper Georgia Strait area creating amazing viewing opportunities, but also causing some issues for these large animals who cannot get out of the way from fast moving boats quickly enough. There have been at least another two strikes leaving propeller cuts. Boaters...we cannot say this often enough: PAY ATTENTION Please! We are pleased to hear that some of you are putting callouts to other boaters near these whales over channel 16 to slow down. Thank you!

Northern Resident Orca have come back in some larger family groups to the top of Johnstone Strait and then, once again headed out towards the top of Vancouver Island. Last third hand report heard was that they had been seen in Goletas Channel. Transient Bigg's Orca are still being evasive and last rumours were that some may have gone into Sechelt Inlet while others were also up near the top of Vancouver Island.

The Pacific White Sided Dolphins are doing what has become a regular Summer event of grouping up and splitting into smaller groups between the Kelsey Bay area and into Nodales Channel with a few down Discovery Passage. It's great to hear that some Dall's Porpoise have showed up, but in their usual fashion, these speed demons zip in and out of areas. We've missed the grouping up of Dall's and Harbour Porpoise we've had over a number of years giving us our Hybrids. Harbour Porpoise seem to have regained a bit of momentum again with sightings again in larger groups than their usual one to three animals quietly foraging.

UNIDENTIFIED KILLER WHALES

Wed Aug 02 2017

16:15 • est. 6-8 Orca circling prey, heading south-east off Edith Point on the NE side of Mayne Island, Georgia Strait. We were walking on shore - halfway out on Edith Point - on the Campbell Bay side. The pod was circling 8-10 seals that were trapped on rocks. Seals always on those rocks, but Orca rarely seen there. When a 20 foot boat approached, the whales moved away. Within 10 minutes, most of the pod stayed out by the boat - between boat and seals - while two Orca returned to the seals. Fascinating! We saw two young orcas in the pod. After 45 or so minutes, the pod left; they did not get any of the seals. ▫ Observed from Shore

My family and I spotted a whale on a sailing trip off Victoria about 3 or 4 nautical miles south of the Trial Islands on the morning of July 28th, 2017. It seemed to be a baleen type lunge feeding with clear splashing as it surfaced. It had a distinct dorsal fin, looking most like a minke whale or fin whale. It was dark in colour. It was solo. We did not see its tail.

His name was Peanut. He was the eighth North Atlantic right whale found dead in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence in as many weeks.
The 26-year-old father of one was pulled onto a New Brunswick beach last week so scientists and vets could carve through his thick skin and layers of blubber to try and determine his cause of death.

“It was not an easy feat,” said Tonya Wimmer, ‎a marine mammal biologist and consultant with the Marine Animal Response Society.
Despite what his name might suggest, Peanut was larger than a school bus. His baleen plates (the hair-covered bristles that filtered his food) were longer than Wimmer is tall.....

Mandurah’s dolphins are renowned for their frisky behaviour, but Murdoch University researcher Krista Nicholson has revealed things get complicated when it comes time for the popular cetaceans to choose their sexual partners.

Ms Nicholson said her Mandurah Dolphin Research Project had observed big groups of dolphins engaging in what looked like “homosexual behaviour”.

She said peak mating season was over, but groups of male dolphins had been observed socialising and she described a pod of 15 who were studied by the research team....

RADIO AUDIO - Volunteers counted fewer dolphins surfacing in Delaware waters during this year’s annual dolphin count compared to previous years, but that doesn't mean the population is in trouble.

Listen Listening...0:46 Delaware Public Media's Katie Peikes reports on the 2017 dolphin count.

They tallied 246 dolphins between Woodland Beach and Fenwick Island this year. In 2016, they counted 285.

Suzanne Thurman, the executive director of the Marine Education Research and Rehabilitation Institute said the MERR Institute had seen a small uptick in the numbers in the last three years, and she’s not sure what this year’s drop could mean for the population...

Sightings of whales and dolphins all around the UK, including Devon, are being reported as part of Sea Watch Foundation's nine day National Whale and Dolphin Watch.

It began on Saturday with members of the public have been sending in their reports of whales, dolphins and porpoises, collectively termed cetaceans, to inform the national survey which is now in its 16th year.
