Last Friday, there was a rare occurence when a large pod of approximately 22 Transient Biggs Orca formed and was observed in Discovery Passage. Within the pod, there were T18s, T19B, and T60s. The Orca were seen off Cape Mudge in the morning, made their way Northward passing Campbell River, and moved into Johnstone Strait by mid-afternoon. Humpback Whales have been seen regularly this past week not only in Discovery Passage but also in Sutil Channel and in the Northern half of Malaspina Strait. There have been sightings of Pacific White Sided Dolphins, some in large groups and some in small groups. Our report includes a few sightings of Southern Resident Orca, Harbour Porpoise, and Dall's Porpoise.

Our first Real Time Monitoring Station is coming together with the last few customized components. Every aspect to this install needs to be a co-ordinated group effort.
We are calling for volunteers to help us complete this project in the Powell River area. Our needs are electrical, internet connectivity, concrete and fibreglass work, a couple of spare strong hands, and possibly some welding. We will co-ordinate with our diver volunteers as the project evolves.
Would you like to be a part of this installation? Please contact us with your information, volunteer capacity, and availability.
Our Volunteer Job Opportunities in our links below are for more permanent volunteer positions and we welcome your interest.
Our team of Volunteers continue to do a great job in making sure all your reports are mapped and published each week.

Six years ago, on 11 August 2010, whale researchers working in the western North Pacific encountered something very unusual: a white male killer whale, or orca. Two days later the white whale, nicknamed Iceberg, reappeared in a large group of orcas – a group that included a second white whale.
In fact, over the past few years the researchers have encountered no fewer than five – and perhaps as many as eight – white orcas in the western North Pacific. They are virtually unheard of elsewhere in the world’s oceans. Their unusual abundance
