Whales, Dolphins, Porpoise Everywhere!

Whales, Dolphins and Porpoise Everywhere! The Northern Resident Orca have decided to spend some time down and around the Northern Georgia Strait. This is a return to some older times when they used to frequent the area. With Transient Bigg's Orca also relatively close by, it's always interesting to see how they try to avoid one another. The Humpback population is staying where they are. Some in Georgia Strait while some up at the top of Johnstone Strait. Dolphins have grouped in numbers up to around 300 then separated into smaller groups all up and down the coast it seems, while the Dall's Porpoise appear to mainly be in the upper Johnstone Strait area. The little Harbour Porpoise, once again appears to be only one possible sighting in the reports.

08:11 • 1 Bigg`s Orca breaching, heading North towards Powell River Mill closer to the mainland by the Westview Ferry terminal, Malaspina Strait. That orca I phoned you about this morning: I saw it breach with my naked eye, then put the scope on it and it was on its back with its stomach showing, flapping its flippers and tail lobbing. Then it went under and the dorsal fin came up showing it to be a big male - tall, very straight fin with no notches on it. I didn't notice the saddle patch if any. I think it then swam behind the trees and after I called you I didn't see it again. I went outside with my camera which has a x65 lens, but it didn't reappear. It may have gone over to Harwood or continued to the ferry dock under water. Hope you were able to see it. There didn't seem to be any other orca around.

While boating in Desolation Sound around 2PM today We came across a lone male Orca swimming West along West Redonda Island. He seemed to be headed towards the Powell Islands. He would come up about 5 times and then dive down for a few minutes. Later in the day while prawning near the Copeland Islands We saw him again South of Townley Island. He was swimming towards Major Rock. He was demonstrating the same behaviour as before up for a few minutes and then dove down for about 20 minutes. He was a lone Orca Male .....I will send you a picture later for you to hopefully Identify him (no photo received - SM).

06:30 • Orca off the Tsawwassen Ferry to Nanaimo Harbour #-- Harbour (1), Georgia Strait. Leaving the mainland via 6:30 (approx) tsawwassen ferry to nanaimo this past tuesday (22nd), saw several Orcas with straight up fins and grey/white sides. Varied size, heading inland. Seemed like a large pod as there were more heading the same direction as we were going out. Seen from the starboard side and the ferry crew I spoke to mentioned they had seen the whales on the way in as well traveling the same direction. Noticed at first because of surfacing to breath (the spray from the blow hole) and then distinguished several fins. Very cool! We have never seen them in the wild before. We took a couple pictures, I dont have the card on me at the moment but I can send them later if you like. Is it common for them to come so close to land/large water craft?. ▫ From Ferry

??:?? • 3 Humpback Whale off Kitty Coleman Beach Park #-- Provincial Park, Georgia Strait. I would like to report we saw two large humpbacks with a small one on Saturday at the Kitty Coleman hump near bates beach. They were resting on the surface for 7-8 breaths, while the little one was busy splashing around. Then they took a deep breath and showed flukes for the big dive then they were gone. It is amazing how they can manoeuver between all the downrigger balls and fishing gear. They were right between two boats that were trolling very close to each other.

GREY WHALES

Sun Aug 30 2015

??:?? • 1 Grey Whale in Davis Bay, Sechelt, Georgia Strait. We have been staying in Davis Bay for a few days and yesterday was a stormy lucky day. In the morning we caught some glimpses of a humpback in the waves. Later in the day a grey came and stuck around all day swimming back and forth along the shore. He even came to the dock twice!! While we were watching we saw spouts off in the distance! One person said it was 3 humpbacks and one said it may have been Orcas. I guess I'll never know. When we woke up this morning we looked out and sure enough the grey is still out there swimming around Davis Bay! I'm beginning to feel like a whale magnet!.
