Sightings: Orca, Humpbacks, Minke, Dolphins, Porpoise and Sea Otter

Noteworthy events are taking place on our waters. Northern Resident Orca, not known to consistently travel the lower Johnstone Strait area have been doing just that. Transient Bigg's Killer Whales too have been consistently sighted. Humpback Whales are appearing in greater numbers with a whopping 19 different animals counted at the top of Johnstone Strait in one day while there were still many others reported farther down (and up) the coast. Pacific White Sided Dolphins, previously considered pelagic, or ocean-going only, have made a few inlets their resident territories. And, Sea Otters are being spotted more frequently in our inside waters. Does this mean we're doing something right? Are we truly making a difference in the health of our ecosystems?

Aaron Webber, Campbell River Whale Watching

August 19:
We were hiking around Neck Point, Nanaimo BC when a small pod of orcas swam by at about 8 p.m. It looked like two adult females each with very young orcas next to them. It also looked like there were two juvenile orcas with them. They were heading west to Nanoose Bay and then veered north towards Winchelsea Island. We have photos of them.
Although it was magic watching the orcas from shore in the fading sunset, what was disturbing was seeing a pleasure craft following them closely as they were travelling through the area. The message really needs to get out there that following families of orcas in close range is not acceptable.
Cathy Ray, Nanaimo

August 19:
The sighting was from Rocky Point about 1km north of Neck point on Monday evening 19th August 2013 at 7:50pm.
I was watching some fishermen fish for Salmon from Rocky point. The sea was flat calm and we could quickly see 2 Orca’s were swimming towards us coming around Neck Point and then they swam to within 15m of the shoreline heading North and seemed to be chasing Salmon or seals at high speed near the surface, everyone reeled in their fishing lines but just before reaching Rocky point and maybe due to a boat coming too close they disappeared and re-appeared approx 400m off in the channel again heading north towards Parksville. We watched them travel north at a steady pace. The boat tried to follow them but would lose them as soon as they dived and gave up after a while.
The two included a large male Orca with a tall dorsal fin, quite broad at the bottom approx 6ft tall with a rounded tip, no notches on the fin could be seen although this was by the naked eye. I have seen other male dorsal fins which appear more streamlined coming to more of a sharper angled tip, this however was almost symmetrical about the vertical axis, broad with a rounded tip. The other Orca was much smaller; I would guess it was a juvenile whale.
It was a privilege to watch them and if repeated I will email in again.
Duncan Etridge, Nanaimo

August 18:
10 pm (reported) Left the Transients just before sunset Southbound by Rebecca Spit, Quadra Island.
Jos Krijnen, Eagle Eye Adventures

Winner of the Whale Watching Trip donated by Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whale and Grizzly Bear Tours, drawn during Powell River Sea Fair, Joan Bech has sent in a lovely comment and Youtube link to their time on the water:

Dear Susan and Garry,
Soren and I want to thank both of you for a wonderful journey and experience last Thursday. The opportunity to see these magnificent animals -- both the orcas and dolphins -- is truly special and something we will never forget. I've had the honour on more than one occasion to be called as a witness at different Aboriginal gatherings. The same holds true here. We have been privileged to witness these beautiful animals, and we are sharing our experience with others. Soren has put together a video from our many photos and filming throughout the day. We also wanted to recognize both of you.
Warm regards,
Joan and Soren Bech, Roberts Creek

Ceatcean Sightings and fixing Email feed

The email subscribers are still only receiving the posts manually, unfortunately, but at least I am able to send the direct links out. In a drastic attempt to finally fix the blockage, I will be removing all images from the time the blockage started and attempt to send them out with text only....very sorry for any inconvenience of duplicated reports, and no photos. I will post some photos after to try to catch them up also.

Cetacean Sightings are up everywhere, but of some noticeable absence are the number of Humpback Whales off the Powell River to Savary area. Both Transient Bigg's Killer Whales and Resident Orca have been showing up almost in the same areas, while the Pacific White Sided Dolphins appear to be back in residence in Nodales Channel.

There has been a delay in preparing this report which I hoped to post on August 11th, but, due to an injury to my right index finger, too many breaks are needed as I type. A million thanks to all of our regular whale watching boat community for helping out when I was in need – my specific thanks are below the report.

5:55 pm Just saw a pod 5 to 6 orca west of Sechelt between the Trail Islands and Sargent Bay. They were headed north west towards Thormanby Island. I will review my photos and send some to you when I can. From what I could tell there was one very large adult with a tall straight dorsal fin, several medium sized whales and one or two young ones. Sadly the whole experience was saddened by the idiot in the powerboat who decided to chase them for quite a long distance. I called the fisheries department on him!

There were 5 of them, 1 VERY large, 2 quit big and 2 wee ones. Just amazing ...

THANK YOU!
Enormous thanks to those who helped and those who wanted to help when I injured my finger: Nick Templeman, Campbell River Whale and Bear Excursions was instrumental in making things work right off the bat and truly stands out; co-ordinating the effort to get me from Port Neville into hospital and getting me back to Kelsey Bay, then keeping tabs on my crossing back to Port Neville; getting the caretaker, Chet, to check on me, and staying in close contact while I worked my way back down to Campbell River with the boat. I could write more, but you get the picture – huge help! Thank you Nick (and his bride to be Janeen).
I must also say thanks to everyone else:

Nick: you are tops on the list!
Geord & Geoff: thanks for waiting and helping out at Kelsey and driving me to Campbell River hospital; thanks also for being willing to cross and get me if it came down to it.
Garry: thanks for the texts
Jen: thanks for the calls
Jos: thanks for the dock space (& the wine)
Aaron (Webber): thanks for the use of your car – huge help
Everyone: thanks for the well wishes and other offers of help and support, and:
Elvis: thanks for the fish :)
