Sightings and Link to Missing Email Report

Previous report didn't go out to email subscribers for some unknown reason!! I do apologize to you all. It was posted too late for overnight feed since it took so long to compile the day after Sea Fair, and am not certain why it didn't make it out the following day. Here is the direct link to it: http://whalesanddolphinsofbc.blogspot.ca/2013/07/very-long-cetacean-report-catch-up.html

The Humpback Whales are still in the Powell River to Savary Island area with a blow off Rebecca Rocks as I type (7:45 pm). There are a total of 4 different animals at least. I can confirm seeing three different animals, but not the fourth and have not had time to investigate. Transient Bigg's Killer Whales have shown up again, and lots of Pacific White Sided Dolphins are in the inlets with a few having spread out.

Additional bit of news was the need to rescue a seal pup, a bit smelly but extremely cute. My unexpected overnight guest caused a bit more delay in the million items on the to-do list which included responding to all your emails. I am not ignoring you, so please bear with me. The pup is now at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center thanks to Pacific Coastal Airlines who donates these rescue flights. These pups are frequently left on shore while the Mom goes off to feed, but monitored in case the Mom doesn't get back after 24 hours. They should be left alone and protected from human and animal intervention. If there is a serious threat, please call the the Marine Mammal Incident Reporting line at 1-800-465-4336 and the Rescue Center will send someone, such as myself out to evaluate and help.

2 pm Humpback Whale off Vivian Island Westing. My friend says the humpback had something that looked like blood on its abdomen. When he said the Whale left fast he said he meant more determinedly and swimming on a straight course West. (Photo showed barnacles with some reddish seaweed growing on the edge of a tail fluke. This is quite normal for Humpbacks, but there is still concern that there is new injury - SM)

Very Long Cetacean Report - Catch up after Sea Fair 2013

Sightings updates are below, and it's a lengthy report, but first a brief, but enthusiastically large Thank You to everyone who helped make the three days of Powell River Sea Fair 2013 a success for us. Even the Humpback Whales just off the fair grounds helped us raise awareness!
Congratulations to Joan Bech of Roberts Creek, the winner of the draw for two 6 hour whale watching tours.
We raised close to $600 from both on line entries and over the three days. Thank you to all who contributed and participated!

Humpback Whales

Humpback Whale off Grief Point
July 25, 2013
Chris and Danielle Bratseth, Powell River

July 29:
9 am One Humpback Whale is inside the reef off the Meadows at Savary Island. First heard the blow at 6:30 am. We'd seen blows over the past 3-4 days, but was too far out towards Vancouver Island to tell what species.
Lesley Roberts, Savary Island

July 28:
11:56 am Humpback Whale off VanAnda, Texada. I could see the blows from Willingdon Beach Sea Fair grounds.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

July 28:
2 pm We watched 2 Humpback whales, only one tail fluked, but definitely two animals back and forth by the Westview side of Grief Point, then Southbound slowly.
Janet Southcott, Powell River

July 28:
5:30 pm Humpback off Grief Point, Powell River.

July 28:
7:30-8 pm 2 Humpback Whales off Vananda, Texada. Possibly 3 of them, but definitely 2. One breached and then few breathes, showed tail flukes and gone.
Tom Adamack, Powell River

July 27:
3:30 or 4 pm Looked like 4 Humpback Whales were Southbound by Powell River Mill mid-channel angling towards Texada.
Darcy Gaudet, Powell River

July 27:
3:46 pm It was nice meeting you yesterday. I'm sure you've already heard, but there are two humpbacks right in front of town right now, heading north towards Harwood. They were here last night as well, with one full breach and a big splash. 5:41 pm I amend my report- I think it's only one whale and it turned around at about the mill and is now heading back south. At this time it is just south of beach gardens.
Jessica Dohm, Powell River

July 27:
3:48 pm Humpback off Grief Point again.
6 pm Humpback spotted off Grief Point.

July 26:
7 am Just to let you know that I saw a single Humpback this morning at 7:00am towards the north eastern end of Texada , (below the microwave tower on Pocohantas Mtn) and about 2/3 across the Malaspina Strait. The same 5 or 6 blows at the surface and then a deep dive, could be same Humpback again. At 7:30 I saw blows further south along Texada Island in the large bay before Vananda. One peculiar observation was that this whale did the surface breathing and then a deep dive as I was expecting but then about 15 seconds later was back at the surface a short distance away. Could it be 2 whales again? I tried to get the scope on the area but tree tops obscured a lot of my view. I did see further blows at 7:45 further south again before I lost them.
Steve Grover, Powell River

July 26:
8:49 am 2 Humpback Whales still out in front of Powell River between Grief Point and VanAnda.

July 26:
11 am 2 Humpback Whales with Kurt and Leif half way between Grief Point, Powell River and VanAnda, Texada.

1:30 – 2:30 pm 1 Humpback was off Beach Gardens, Grief Point.
John Carter, Powell River

July 25:
6:30 am Just spotted the humpback out front of Texada St heading south. Rats...have to get ready for work and can't watch.
Joanne Brough, Powell River

July 25:
7 am Two Humpback Whales right out in front of Westview, Powell River.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

July 25:
10:07 am This Humpback Whale off Grief Point is HUGE – the largest I've seen.
Elvis, Eagle Eye Adventures

July 25:
11:50 am One very large Humpback is by VanAnda, Texada Island.
12:42 pm One Humpback off Grief Point and the larger of the two Humpbacks is somewhere off Texada.
1:28 I'm still off Grief Point with Humpback Whale. Some Transient Orca are off the Powell River mill heading this way.

Jen Furst, Campbell River Whale Watching

July 25:
4 pm Here are some photos from a large humpback that put on quite a show for us on Thursday off Grief Point. See above photo.
Chris and Danielle Bratseth, Powell River

July 25:
9:30 pm Sighting July 25 - just saw 2 spouts and backs of whales, assumed Humpbacks, heading SW down Agamemnon channel near southernmost hydro crossing.
Also saw 2 harbour porpoises at south end of Lewis channel on July 15.
David Stiles and family

July 24:
Since I am not up on my species, I am going to presume it was a Humpback whale we watched performing out front of the beach gardens..later after helping friends we went back and spotted it out front of Vananda! We had quite a show from the first viewing..jumps, tail. flippers..which were white with black circles underneath. First one flipper, then the other flipper, tail, jump, both flippers waving..exciting most beautiful show!!
Joanne Brough, Powell River

July 23:
8:29 pm Humpback(s) just showed up again below VanAnda on Texada side. Chance there are two. We watched them from 8 – 8:20 pm what a great show.

Last Saturday July 20th on the 3.30pm Ocean Magic trip we had members of K Pod off the west coast of San Juan Island. You can see the tag half way down the rt side of the dorsal fin. Stopped working I believe in April /13. It looks nasty when I crop in.

Sea Fair Reminder and Cetacean Sightings

Reminder this is the last chance till midnight July 25 to take part in our fundraising draw for the two Whale Watching trips through our on line link at: Click Here for more information and Enter to WIN!
If you can, please join us at Powell River's 50th Sea Fair. We will have a table for the three days as well as being part of the parade on Saturday.
Draw entries will be available through the weekend till closing Sunday, July 28, 2013 when the winner will be drawn.
A huge thank you to those who have contributed so far.
You are making a difference!
There is not one penny going to anything other than direct costs of Wild Ocean Whale Society - WOWs. We are all volunteers and do not receive any remuneration or compensation for fuel etc. Thank you again!

Below is a brief summary of sightings for the past two days. There is not enough time to compile the complete list due to Sea Fair preparations.

Cetacean Sightings:

Transient Bigg's Killer Whales: reappeared July 24 around 3:30 pm between Cortez and Kinghorn Islands and headed up Lewis Channel.

Northern Resident Orca: had gone West out Queen Charlotte Strait on the 22nd, and also returned East to the upper Johnstone Strait area July 24. They were heading back towards Robson Bight.

Humpback Whales: Every day there are sightings of at least one, but one report had more, Humpbacks between Grief Point, Powell River down Malaspina Strait to almost Lang Bay. The last report was again July 24 off of Beach Gardens Resort, Powell River. There is at least the one very large Humpback, but personally, I know I had 'Houdini' one day and the other whale was not one that I could identify for certain, but now believe it to be a different whale.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins: still in larger numbers then breaking into smaller groups spread out from Campbell River up into Nodales Channel and just above the Yuculta Rapids, where the main numbers seem to stay.

Harbour Porpoise: A few have shown up including July 24, close to where the Transient Orca were assumed to be on the hunt for them July 24.

Again, apologies for this summarized version of the report. The full report will be posted after Sea Fair with the name of the winner from the draw and photos from Sea Fair.

Powell River's Sea Fair is our first official outreach program as Wild Ocean Whale Society – WOWs.

till Dark the same very large Humpback Whale travelled between Albion Point to Myrtle Rocks on the mainland side of Malaspina Strait. It was back and forth showing it's tail before staying down for a number of minutes resurfacing only about ten feet from where it went down. It was a wonderful show.

The humpback reappeared this evening at about 6:00 pm. in the Stager Road area. It was heading up the coast towards Myrtle Rocks. It returned at about 9:00 pm heading down the coast. July 21:
12:39 pm Managed to locate the Humpback with hopes of getting a couple photos for identification with a borrowed point and shoot camera. July 16:
6:51 pm Humpback Whale just below and heading Northward towards VanAnda, Texada Island. With the calm water, the blows are really noticable. It's tight to the Texada shore.
Jim Southern, Powell River

July 16:
7 pm After the call came in from Jim Southern, I headed out to see if I could get an Identification photo of this Humpback. After sitting for quite a while, she finally surfaced at a distance, but I did manage a couple of photos around 8 pm from which I was able to identify a whale I hadn't seen for a couple of years known as 'Houdini' or officially as BCX0022. She has a bit of a fresh gash on the underside and below her tail fluke. It looks similar to a line of some sort having cut into her tail, but there was no other evidence of entanglement from what I could see. There were no sightings reports of her today, the 17th.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

July 15:
4:00 -4:30 observed a whale blowing aprox 1 km nw of Pocahontas bay, close to Texada. Whale stayed on location, several blows then down for 5+ mins. obviously feeding. Pocohontas bay is approx 1/3 of the way between NE point and Vananda on Texada. The tugs pull in there with their booms to get out of SE storms. The whale would have been due south of Myrtle rocks, close to Texada.
Bob and Laura Johnson, Powell River

July 15:
7 pm Large Humpback by Albion Point half to three-quarters of the way across to Texada. Looks like it's headed North; doing long dives. (I went out to see if I could locate it for ID, but he/she eluded me - SM)
Bill and Sara Taylor, Powell River

July 14:
7 pm on Sunday 14th I came across what I think was a Minke (identified as a Humpback Whale from the photos – SM) whale at approximately 2 nautical miles SW of a line between Coho Pt on Texada and Harwood. Pics attached. ps Love your updates Susan.
Ray Hogan, Powell River

July 13:
Our son saw a Humpback Whale on July 13th off of Texada Island near Lang Bay. The whale was feeding and heading up the coast. Sorry no photo taken.
