Transient Orca

May 13:
Transient Orca T-20 for the blog tonight If I make it! We had this guy by himself at apporox 1810 hrs in Sutil Channel (between Marina Island and Francisco Point, Quadra Island) headed south at 6 knots! Couldn't find his Gang anywhere around him.

May 11:
Around 9:30 pm as the sun set, Orca Northbound by Campbell River. Got report on 12th.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

May 9:
About 6 pm 5 or 6 Transient Orca including 1 sprouter (juvenile male) and at least 1 calf with an orange tinge on the white eye patch were tight close to the Discovery Pier by Campbell River. One female went right inside the pier into about 10 to 15 feet of water. I watched from shore and followed them to Tyee Spit and watched their blows to another bay across the channel across from April Point lodge. They were incredibly active doing spy hops, tail lobs and head stands waving their tail flukes in the air. All the seals disappeared up the river into very shallow water.

Humpback Whale 'KC' Breaching !

May 13:
We also (see Orca and Dolphin reports) had the Humpbacks known as KC & Ariel at approx 1430 hrs slowly foraging North in Discovery Passage 1/4 mile North of Browns Bay. Just lazy fluking today. (first reported in the morning – SM)

May 12:
9:57 am 2 Humpback Whales in Seymour Narrows.
Aaron, Campbell River Whale Watching

May 12:
We received a report from Garry of Aboriginal Journeys @ approx 1330hrs of one, possibly two Humpback Whales Northbound in Discovery Passage on the Vancouver Island shoreline at a spot we call No Name Creek (Approx 3/4 mile North of Browns Bay) Garry stayed with the animals for us and we arrived on scene at 1425 hrs. By this time they had moved across Discovery Passage and were travelling slowly very tight to the Quadra Island shoreline. They were approx 3/4 mile South of Kanish Bay at this point. After a look at the two and a couple of tail shots my first instinct was to say KC and a friend (comparing to a couple of days ago I see that I am right on KC just don't know the other well enough) After 15 minutes of viewing they moved into deeper water then KAWOOF! Full breach I believe from KC then another! Then some tail lobs which may have come from the other animal or both I'm not fully sure. We left them headed into Kanish Bay at approx 1540 hrs......what a fantastic viewing! I've enclosed the ID shots and a couple others for a treat, enjoy!
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

From Jackie Hildering:
Humpback tail flukes is BCY0767 aka "Arial".
It is of great interest to know they were together. Thank you so much for the sighting Nick. I share with you that KC is very acrobatic. He is the whale that even ended up on the front page of the Campbell River Courier in full breach.
See blog item about that sighting here. http://themarinedetective.com/2011/07/13/identifying-jumping-giants/Interestingly, on that sighting too, KC and Arial were together.
I know that this is not applicable to you as you are always outside 100m when in the presence of whales, but I have had some hairy moments when working around KC. Thought it might be worthwhile to let you know this.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

May 13:
We also (see Orca and Humpback reports) spotted what could very well have been upwards of 600+ Pacific Whitesided Dolphins in a 5 mile stretch of Bute Inlet. Amazing day!
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

From Orca Network, Whidbey Island, WA
May 12
At least two groups of transients were sighted moving north, northwest through Porlier Pass (north end of Galiano Island) about 2:30 pm. We caught up with T87, possibly T90, and one other female with a calf (appeared to be at least 2 years old). Further off the Valdez Island shoreline was T102 with at least 5 others, including two younger juveniles. It was frustrating to not be able to ID the younger animals and females! They continued to make their way north up the Strait of Georgia, taking steady long dives and surfacing in a scattered formation. There was some predation going on, because when we arrived on scene the gulls were hovering around and picking yummy bits of flesh off the surface. Two roaming gangs of transients out and about today, each at the polar opposite ends of the islands! They were covering all their bases it seems!
Tasli Shaw, Steveston Seabreeze Adventures
May 10
Watched 3 orcas heading north along the west shorelines of DeCourcy and Mudge Islands (about ten miles south of Nanaimo). Looked like 2 adults and a calf. Dorsal fins appeared small and curved. One adult had a gray saddle behind it's fin. They appeared to be feeding off Mudge Island, then started to head south, passing just to the east of Round Island.
Barb Wallace
May 10
1442 - Two orcas sighted northbound off Jack Pt (1 mile east of Nanaimo) and reported to whale hotline.
Capt. Fred Wicks, M.V.Quinsam
May 9
John Ford relayed a report of about 8 Bigg's killer whales near Nanaimo around 3 pm. Graeme Ellis got out to document them as they were feasting on something, but seas were too heavy to tell what it was.

May 11
We got really lucky just as we reached Turn Point, a humpback whale was spotted north of East Point! It was decision time; continue our course, or extend our trip and go for it. We decided to go for it and headed further north. And was it worth it! The humpback whale blew magnificently in the distance. We watched as it surfaced a few times before flashing its fluke in a fluke up dive.

2 Humpback Whales encountered a couple of miles south west of Race Rocks that were surfing in 3-4' waves south of Race Rocks! This was my first Humpback Whale encounter of the 2012 season:)

Killer Whales on the Move

More reports of Orca – Killer Whales in a couple of areas. I believe these may be the same Transient Orca as seen yesterday and in the previous days reports, but have no confirmation to posting time. Looks like some of those Pacific White Sided Dolphins have made their way to Sechelt. Update on the Humpback Whale with confirmation from Jackie Hildering of MERS that it was KC (Kelp Creature) who had been seen with another just above Johnstone Strait a few days before.

Hi Susan, Here is our gang from today. We got the call at 1400hrs of Orca off of Fransisco Point on the East Shore of Quadra and got off the dock at 1425. We found the gang westbound in a zigzag pattern about 1.5 miles off of fransisco. We stayed with them for approx 2 hrs. Not much for action in this time, just your usual zigzag transient pattern starting at 5-6 knots and resting after. They came together at Viner point on Reid Island at about 1630 for some socializing. Nice gang to see, not much for action! We then went over to Centre Island where we found the branded juvenile Stellar sea Lion.

Just as I spotted around 30 Pacific White Sided Dolphins, the phone rang with a call from neighbour Steve Grover to let me know about them. While watching, there were three large Bald Eagles taking advantage of the fishing with all the other birds while the Dolphins continued to chase and feed, with the occasional leap thrown in. Orca Network Reports from Washington State:

April 29
Cascadia Research undertook a survey out of Westport, Washington, and encountered a group of ~25 southern resident killer whales including individuals from both K and L pods. The whales were traveling rapidly to the north. We were able to photograph many of the individuals present and the photos are being sent to the Center for Whale Research and Northwest Fisheries Science Center to confirm identity of those whales present.

April 27
Calm seas, sunshine, and ORCAS! Upon leaving the harbor we traveled along the east side of San Juan Island and found members of the J-Pod at the southern end of the island. For much of our encounter, the whales were spread out over a large distance but would then regroup and spend time within close proximity of each other. Whales were traveling, milling, and exhibited foraging behavior, although no fish were seen. We heard amazing vocalizations using our underwater hydrophone; squeaks, squeals and percussive sounds. Naturalists Colleen and Amy, San Juan Safaris

April 28
A few orcas did their own Tour de Lopez this afternoon coming past the south end of Lopez. A small, slow-moving, tightly packed pod of 5 - 7 orcas traveled east past Iceberg Point, turned and headed out further in the Strait in a westerly drift with at least a dozen boats in pursuit.
Sally Reeve

April 28
One day the Residents, and the next the Transients, and then the Residents and then the Transients... We are soon to finish the best April that I can remember for Orca sightings. Orcas have been seen about two out of three days this April. Amazing. Yesterday it was the Ts off of Iceberg Pt. Lopez Island, with the Cascade Mts. in the background. We left them late, headed in the direction of Deception Pass including T49C and the T124As and T86A and her kids.
Capt. Jim Maya

April 28
We encountered a group of about 12 transients Orcas, including T49As & Bs, at Iceberg Pt on our trip this afternoon. These are the same transients we encountered about a month ago hunting seals near Yellow Island. Today, they were grouped tightly together in a resting pattern.
Captain Brian Goodremont and Naturalist Kevin Culmback, San Juan Outfitters

April 27
We had the T086A's with the T124A's and T049C east bound heading towards Race Rocks on the afternoon of April 27th. Thanks to Russ from Sooke Coastal for the heads up.
Mark Malleson

April 30
Karen Morton called to 10 am with a report of 1 or 2 gray on the east side of Port Susan, at Country Club, headed south after feeding for about an hour. She said this is the first time she's seen one so far north in Port Susan.

April 29
My husband and I were in the South Sound (Case Inlet) and saw a whale today around noon. We couldn't tell if it was a grey what or a humpback. We saw it moving North toward Allyn and since there's no outlet going that way we thought we would see it going South but we never did. It was a very cool experience!
Thanks!

Transients and Dolphins by Powell River

Transient (meat eating) Killer Whales together with Pacific White Sided Dolphins off Powell River! It's a dangerous, for the dolphins, mix. It was difficult to get some other work done and not watch out the window while the dolphins and Orca were heading towards one another. Unfortunately I couldn't get out on the water even though it was beautifully calm, but a couple of tours from came all the way to Powell River to see the Whales and Dolphins.
Note: the reports below will be mixed for species rather than duplicating them.

9 am, 10:20 am and 11:30 am The dolphins, estimated at around 80 were still feeding back and forth from Sliammon to in front of the ferry terminal by Powell River. They did spend some time leaping and doing their usual play / feed patterns, but stayed in front of Powell River.
Susan MacKay

Hi Susan Thanks for the heads up this morning. I went to the lookout shortly after getting off the phone with you around 10:30 this morning and saw 150-200 dolphins making their way south. They then turned and moved in towards the ferry and Willingdon beach where I left them at about 11:15. Lots of leaps and milling about, looked like they were feeding as there were lots of birds above them. Then a boat came and pushed them towards the west end of Harwood. What a great way to spend the morning!
Nicole Robertson, Powell River

11:30 am A call came in that at least 3 Orca, all small fins were spotted off Atrevida Reef just North of Powell River and Sliammon headed towards Powell River.
Kim Liseberg (sp?), Savary Island/Lund

12 pm Dolphins, I think were using a tug and tow to hide off the Powell River mill and were now heading slowly Southward towards Grief Point.
Susan MacKay

12 pm At least 4 Orca which included at least one large male, were taking their time moving slowly Southward off Sliammon.
Steve Grover, Powell River

1 pm The first whale watching tour found the Orca just off Sliammon Creek. There were 7 whales including at least one small calf. Later, over the radio, it was confirmed that they had at least 8 whales with 2 calves and T02C.
Lee, (sorry Lee, you're new to this area, please email your other information to me for credit)

Transient Orca T02C, Harwood Island
April 29, 2012
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

1 pm The Dolphins count was down to between 50 to 60 of the larger ones in front of the viewpoint in Powell River. They were bunched up pretty tightly and appeared not to know what direction (North or South) they wanted to go. I didn't see where the rest of them got to. I last saw them, still in front of the ferry terminal with their noses pointed Northward at around 2:30 pm.
Susan MacKay

3:30 pm Lee waited with the Transient Orca till Jen, Campbell River Whale Watching got on scene close in to Harwood Island and starting to pick up the pace a bit towards Rebecca Rocks, half way between Harwood and Texada Islands. They again stalled and soon after, Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures arrived on scene. He was with them till a bit after 4:15 pm. Nick contributed a number of great photos and links to a couple of his video / audio clips. Check out his report below.

4:15 pm Pacific White Sided Dolphins, numbers now back up to around 100, managed to sneak past the Orca, just across the passage, and were by Atrevida Reef heading Northward.
Jen, CR Whale Watching

The Lund Dolphins were seen around 16:00 hrs and were developing quite an entourage, so we did not follow along. Lund was treated to 25 to 30 dolphins cruising between Savary and the main land heading NW to Major rock. They were making good time and were soon out of site.

Hi Susan! We had an amazing day with this Gang of Orca today. There were 8 animals in Total, my rusty eyeballs can pick out T02C and T02C2 and T02C3 I think it is?! The rest I am leaving in your capable hands. (No time to check them all or send them off for verification yet – SM) Here is the link to some under water video and some amazing underwater vocals that I posted on you tube as well. I have a Swann HD mini camera in an underwater housing and didn't realize while it was happening but when we listened and watched the clips later on the computer the vocals were amazing!! The vocals and echo location came right thru the underwater camera housing and being underwater with no interference came thru crystal clear!! I was amazed. This was shot just after the confirmed kill of a harbour seal and during the food sharing process. What a way to start the season! Take care Susan!

Transient Orca Powell River

Transient Orca are spending more time again close to Myrtle Rocks, just south of Powell River. This is the same group of 8 to 10 whales including the two calves, T02C and T20 that's been close to Powell River for most of April. There are lots of seals and sea lions in the area, so plenty to eat. Also below are some reports of Pacific White Sided Dolphins and Dall's Porpoise.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Transient Orca – Killer Whales

April 28:
7:40 am A call came in from Steve Grover that there were Orca just off the ferry terminal in Powell River heading Southward. They always seem to be behind a large tree that blocks my view in that direction! Once they cleared that tree, they started to breach, spy hop and do some great tail lobs. I could identify T02C immediately and saw the two calves porpoising close by. With all the birds above, I assume they were on some food. A couple more spy hops, breaches and tail lobs and they carried on towards Grief Point.
Susan Mackay – Thanks Steve!

April 28:
10:30 am Taking their time, the Orca made it past Myrtle Rocks and continued heading South towards Black (Albion) Point and Lang Bay. No amount of activity.
Bill Taylor, Powell River

April 28:
Prior to that, they had stopped off Myrtle Rocks and spent some more time Breaching, Spy Hopping and splashing about.
Holly Roy, Powell River

April 28:
4:15 pm Pod of Orca just off Black (Albion) Point heading Northward towards Myrtle Rocks and Powell River. Two calves in the group close to females.
Nina Falls, Powell River

April 28:
Around 4:30 or 5 pm: Thanks again for the call today, we really enjoyed seeing the orca. I tried to get some photos of their return trip (heading Northward). They were further off shore and doing long dives and milling around, so I guess they were feeding. No good show on the second viewing.
Holly Roy, Powell River

9 pm Just getting too dark out there, but the Transients have not been spotted out in front of Powell River yet, so they may be holding close to Myrtle Rocks. Keep your eyes open!
Susan MacKay

April 27:
10:55 am Whales off Brown's Bay, by Campbell River. No direction given and no response to repeated calls for clarification.
Vessel, Possibly a tug boat, announced over the radio.

April 23:
Morning Susan, Just to report a sighting of about seven orca at Myrtle Rocks this morning at 7:45 am. They were heading south , taking long, long dives. What a great sight to wake up to! Regards,
Holly Roy, Powell River

April 23:
8:30 am At least 6, maybe more, Orca including 3 larger dorsals and at least one small calf tight together heading Southward. Between Myrtle Rocks and Black (Albion) Point, south of town.
Bill Taylor, Powell River

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

April 23:
Around noon a large group of Dolphins headed West off the bottom of Savary Island. They seemed to be really moving – lots of white water.
Lesley and Neil Roberts, Savary Island

April 20:
4:30 pm around 60+ Pacific White Sided Dolphins quickly moving Northward towards Myrtle Rocks.
Bill Taylor, Powell River

April 13:
While camping by Dinner Rock, south of Lund, we saw some dolphins.

Orca, Dolphins, Grey Whales and Humpbacks. After my computer failure, I'm back on line with the sightings reports over the past week. This new system is not quite set up for the photo editing required to post, but I have managed to include a few smaller ones that have been submitted. The Cetaceans are coming back to our area!

Below this more current report, you'll find the report that was about to be posted when my system totally failed.

Grey Whales

April 1:
5:30 pm 2 Grey Whales from around 5pm. I thought I'd seen something, but every time I grabbed the binoculars, I saw nothing or a couple of sea lions. Finally I managed to catch one of the two whales lifting it's head high enough as it blew and took a breath to see clearly that it was a Grey Whale. The two were between Texada Island and Westview, Powell River heading Northward. I last saw their blows heading NW towards Vancouver Island around 6:45 pm. Unusual to see them on this side of the strait.

Orca – Killer Whales

April 1:
Orcas Northbound by Campbell River at 6 pm. Apparently some at Menzies Bay, near Seymour Narrows now. Not sure how many. I'll text you if I get a number of Orca at Menzies. Not sure if we had 2 groups here or just one – seems pretty quick for them to get to the Narrows in 1 hour.
Later info: Sounds like the number of Orcas Northbound past Campbell River at 6pm was 4 to 6. Not sure about Menzies Bay numbers yet.

April 2:
Sounds like there were between 10 to 15 Orca in Menzies Bay last night (April 1). Just milling about. Lots of seals in there – unusual.

Note: Will post some of the Menzie Bay Orca photos from Jack Springer, CR Whale Watching as soon as possible. Susan

Humpback Whales - Mexico

Been on a couple of whale watching trips. These Humpback photos were taken just a couple of weeks ago. The mommas were teaching the babies how to swim, getting ready to head back north.

Delayed Report to March 31, 2012:

Hundreds of Dolphins and Orca too!

After so few sightings on the Mainland side of the Sunshine Coast, it was great to hear of the Pacific White Sided Dolphins and then some Orca by Powell River.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

March 30:
11:20 am a call came in that there were Hundreds of fast moving Pacific White Sided Dolphins between Black Point and Myrtle Rocks heading Northward towards Powell River. The ocean was a massive foaming boil from their fast maneuvers. They just seemed to disappear.

Orca – Probably Transients

March 30:
3:45 pm Three Orca two large dorsals and one small one were very slowly moving Northward right where the Dolphins (above) had been. They were doing long dives and just taking their time.
Bill Taylor

March 30:
Hi Susan, Just spotted ( 4:10 pm ) about 8 orca of all sizes coming north up the middle of the Malaspina Strait past Myrtle Rocks. They were rolling and diving and tail slapping and one breach. Too far away for a photo unfortunately. Regards,
Holly Roy

Just to let you all know, I had intermittently scanned the waters in front of Powell River, as well as getting a few neigbours to scan also, and no-one reported seeing the Dolphins or the Orca in front of Powell River or towards Lund. There are reports of more Sea Lions moving into the area, which would attract Transient Orca. Keep your eyes open all – they're out there.

Orca in Our Area

Orca again by Cape Mudge, off Campbell River. Other Sightings are few and far between. There have been a couple of Grey Whales appearing in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. The shrimp draggers are still back and forth in front of Powell River. There are cetaceans out there, but it's a big ocean – keep looking!

Sad news of this morning's passing of Spinnaker, the Pacific White Sided Dolphin who has been at the Vancouver Aquarium since being saved from a net in 1991. A necropsy is being done.

Hummingbird update: They are very happy that the winds have eased. They had a terrible time getting to the rocking feeder. My four birds are feeding a lot with the two females actually sitting at the feeder together lately.

Orca – Killer Whales

Hi Susan, Just got a couple recent reports of Orcas in our area the last couple days. The first report was of a couple Orcas southbound past Cape Mudge, Quadra Island around 1 pm March 6th.

The second report was of at least 4 Orcas northbound past Cape Mudge, Quadra Island at 6 pm March 7th. It looks like we are seeing more activity.

Sightings - Orca & Dolphins

Orca Report including a link to the Satellite tagged Southern Resident J26's travels. Pacific White Sided Dolphins are back in the sightings reports. Considering they are considered a pelagic, open ocean, cetacean we are very lucky to see them in our inside waters. There were only minimal sightings of them till around 18 years ago when they started to come back into inside waters in larger numbers. Their gregarious and playful antics and leaps make all who see them smile. Have you had your smile today? Let me know if you see them so I can pass it on.

Information about the Orca tagging and satellite tracking map of tagged Southern Resident J26 can be found at: http://www.nwfsc.noaa.gov/research/divisions/cbd/marine_mammal/satellite_tagging.cfm  The map illustrates the track of J26 over the first three days to February 23rd after tag deployment.

February 27:
Unidentified pod of 7 - 9 Orca were spotted up around the Sointula / Port McNeill area heading West during the morning.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

February 28:
HI SUSAN, THIS MORNING ON THE 11:15 FERRY FROM VANCOUVER ABOUT HALFWAY TO LANGDALE WE SAW A GOOD SIZE POD OF SILVER SIDED DOLPHINS. THEY WERE SO CLOSE TO THE FERRY. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH THEM PLAYING IN THE WATER. THEY WERE HEADED NORTH. HOPE THAT THIS CAN BE USEFUL

February 26:
5:20 pm At least 20 Pacific White Sided Dolphins were playing in the Queen of Burnaby's wake heading towards Powell River. A few leaps and surfing movements then they turned to follow the ferry's wake towards Comox. I spotted a few off to top of Texada around 6pm, but I guess the rest continued with the ferry.
