Orca Confusion !

A large catch up report. It's surprising how much happened while I was out of cell and radio range; and how much I missed! Apologies to any that were missed – please let me know and I will make sure it's in the next update.
There were actually three groups of Orca that converged in and around the Campbell River area on August 11th. The Southern Residents came up Georgia Strait and some went down Johnstone Strait having circumnavigated Vancouver Island. The Northern Residents were down Johnstone Strait and don't know if they made it down as far as Brown's Bay or just into and out of Nodales Channel. The Transients were around in and out of various channels too and not sure how close they got to Campbell River......Total confusion. I have sorted through it all and still am not sure of a couple of the reports – they are noted.

Transient (Bigg's) Orca T02C's
2012
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

Northern Resident Orca

August 13:
8:45 am A23's, A25's and A30's were slowly Westbound in the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. They took till around 9:20 am to make it to Izumi Rock. From there they spread out across over to Cracroft Point then slowly headed back to the Bight. Considering the long run they had yesterday, they spent most of their time resting.
2:45 pm All the Orca were Eastbound out of the Bight and passing Naka Creek.

August 12:
Around 8:30 am 17 Orca Eastbound by Kelsey Bay.
Little after 9 am Orca reported heading into Nodales Channel. A23's, A25's and A30's
They went into Nodales and by 2 pm were already one their way out. “Don't think I've seen the Resident Orca go in and out of Nodales that fast.”
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys.

3 pm The whole bunch of them were headed West past Kelsey Bay. They covered a lot of territory.

August 11:
9 am in the fog: 15 + Orca by the rubbing beaches in the Bight. By 10 am it was figured out that it was the A23's, A25's and A30's. During the day, they came out and around 1 pm headed up Blackfish Sound. Then around 6 pm they came down through Weynton Pass into Johnstone Strait and headed East, back towards the Bight, but continued down the Strait.

August 10:
8:30 am The Resident Orca were foraging from Blinkhorn in Johnstone Strait down to Kaikash Creek heading East towards the Bight. By 9:30 am All of the A23's, A25's and A30's were inside the Bight. Then they came out, and then back in.

Transient (Bigg's) Killer Whales

August 13:
10:30 am 4 Orca were spotted on the Gilford Island side of Knight Inlet. They travelled towards Village Island and cut through Whitebeach Pass into Blackfish Sound where they were Identified as the T18's and T19's. They stopped to take a Dall's Porpoise while some others managed to get away up Blackfish. These Orca continued down to Cracroft Point where they turned up Johnstone Strait along the Hanson Island shoreline. Once at Weynton Pass, they checked out some of the rocks by the Stephenson Islets and continued up towards Mitchell Bay, Malcolm Island around 3 pm. I believe they continued towards Port McNeill in Cormorant Channel, but had no confirmation.

August 12:
The T02C's were by Dent, in the Yucultas. then Arran Rapids, by Bute Inlet chasing PWS Dolphins.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

7:30 pm The Orca, T2C's were still in pursuit hunting PWS Dolphins up Frederick Arm. No kill, but good effort. Last seen heading deeper into Frederick Arm.
Jack Springer, Campbell River Whale Watching

August 11:
9:32 am Orca by Refuge Cove. The 4 Transient Orca T02C's were hunting off Kinghorn Island by Sarah Point at the entrance to Desolation Sound. Left them at Mary Point, Cortez Island at 12:29 pm
Scotty, Painter's Lodge

August 11: Note: This report may possibly have been Southern Resident Orca
Evening: 6 Orca Southbound at Cape Mudge!!! Just a quick follow up to my sighting last night; The Orca travelled quickly from the lighthouse to Whilby Shoals at which point they may have made a kill. I saw 2 Dall's Porpoise or Pacific White Sided Dolphins quickly swim away (happened too fast to ID. Definitely not Harbour Porpoise though). Lots of splashing, tail slaps, circling. They hung around a bit celebrating and then *poof* they vanished, possibly behind Quadra Island. Very neat to see, as always.
Tara Bladon, Campbell River

August 10:
7:30 am Transients in Brown's Bay, Campbell River.
10:55 am T69D, the lone female Westing at Ripple Point

12:30 pm I left the lone female Orca T069D at Peterson Island, Kelsey Bay, still westbound at 7 knots!
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

12:55 pm T069D was at Hickey Point still going West at 6-7 knots.
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

10:15 am 3 Orca including a calf popped up by Mitlenatch Island.
Ted Douglas, Powell River

9:15 am In Johnstone Strait, other groups joined up, the T18's, T19's as well as the T46's with the brand new calf were together at the top of Cracroft Island by the Sophias hunting Dall's Porpoise. By 12:15 pm this group had reached Mitchell Bay, Malcolm Island and continued West. By 2:30 pm they were seen, still Westbound by Pulteney Point Lightstation, across from Port McNeill.

Southern Resident Orca

August 11:
8 am a couple of Orca were spotted between Telegraph Cove and Alert Bay in the fog.
9:30 am Some (no numbers or direction) Orca were by Kelsey Bay.

Note: This report may possibly be Transient (Bigg's) Orca:
Orca's thru the Bay area on Saturday around 3:00pm not sure of exact time. There were two groups pretty close together 6 in front and 4 behind. I think 10 total. They were on the other side of the water from the bay so were only able to see them thru the scope. Then about an hour hour and half later I heard on the radio that they were breeching, spy hoping and generally putting on a great show. I am anxious to hear if they were meat eaters or fish eaters.
Jacquie Nevinger, Brown's Bay

Southern Resident Orca from K-Pod and possibly a few L-Pod came up from Puget Sound area and into Discovery Passage, by Campbell River. Some also did the complete circumnavigation of Vancouver Island sneaking past the Northern Resident Pods.
3 pm They were reported back down Georgia Strait being spotted off Saturna Island.

Dall's were spotted intermittently around the top of Johnstone Strait, but around 12:30 pm 4 of them were speeding up Blackfish Sound – see Transient Orca report.

August 12:
Although none specifically noted or reported, they are seen darting here and there, usually at the top of Weynton Passage.

August 10:
9:15 am Large group of Dall's Porpoise heading East from Blinkhorn – little did they know they were headed towards the Transients.

Orca All Over the Place - Unusual Sightings Reports

Orca, both Northern Resident and Transient (Bigg's), spread out all over the place from Denman Island in Georgia Strait to reports of a very large group by Cape Caution. Humpback Whales have again ventured down towards Campbell River as well as new ones entering the top end of Johnstone Strait. Minke Whales have also spread out with at least one spotted across Queen Charlotte Strait yesterday. Dall's Porpoise are in abundance near the top of Johnstone Strait while Pacific White Sided Dolphins are still in abundance in the inside lower channels with a few showing up the top of Johnstone Strait. The little Harbour Porpoise, as always, take a back seat when there are so many larger, more visible, animals to report.
And for the unusual sightings, I've posted a separate catagory since there are a few very interesting reports.

Northern Resident (fish eating) Killer Whales

August 9:
During the day, there were rumours of Orca being spotted in so many areas that it took till the afternoon to sort out that the A30's and A36 boys were the ones heading West up Johnstone Strait. The first reports which can only now be confirmed came in about 12 pm from Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures that a private boater reported 15 or so Orca Westbound in Race Passage, just below Kelsey Bay. The A30's and A36's are now, 6:30 pm, right around the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve.

August 9:
7:30 pm A30's, A36's, A23's, A24's and A25's turned East by Kaikash Creek heading back towards Robson Bight.
Wayne Garton, Stubbs Island and Jared Towers

August 8:
First report that came in was that at 3 am (yes, that's three in the morning) the kayak camp at the Sophia Islands saw and heard around 14 Orca heading West past their camp and spread out.
Larry, Discovery Skiff
They must have snuck past cause then:
9 am 4 Orca heading West along the Vancouver Island side across from Boat Bay, just below the Sophias.
And not long after, the 4 Orca turned out to be a lot more..... the A30's and even more were spread out from the Bight to Blinkhorn Island, by Telegraph Cove. Later they turned and headed East at the aptly named 'Turn Point'.

August 7:
9 am A36 boys were found in the fog at Donagal Head, Malcolm Island The A30's and the A11's were all soon spotted heading down Blackfish Sound to the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve.
Throughout the day they did what they have been doing, foraging and back and forth from Cracroft Point, Blackney Pass to the Bight.

August 7:
Afternoon: A HUGE pod of Orca numbers up to maybe 100 (Superpod) were reported just around Cape Caution....no updates.
Bill Mackay, Mackay Whale Watching

6:52 pm Just leaving T19B and T46's with little squirt (calf) Westbound by Elk Bay.
Scotty, Painter's Lodge

Humpback Whales

August 7, 8 and 9:
Getting a daily count has been difficult especially with the fog; today for example I was out and thought I heard a blow. About half an hour later this Humpback Whale came from the area I was just at..... how did I miss it? Was it resting in the kelp? In any case, it headed off with very long dives towards the Whitecliffe Islets. All I saw was that it had all white tail flukes. No time for camera – it was gone off in the distance. Then another came from the Whitecliffe Islets and did the same thing only in the other direction. Leaving me in the middle, feeling neglected! There are the same numbers around – give or take. There have been huge tail lobs, mostly seen by the Whitcliffe Islets, breaches, mostly by Cracroft Point it seems, and lunge feeding in all areas including Fife Sound. 'Arogonaught' seems to really enjoy the Weynton Pass tide rips and is usually found there, 'Freckles', well known from last year's reports has been spotted a few times, and of the whales I had seen yesterday lunge feeding in Fife Sound, I could not identify from the references I have, so are possibly new ones to the area. Counts range from 6 to possibly 8 animals. Also:

August 9:
9:56 am Humpback Whale or possibly 2 spotted at Green Sea Bay across from Chatham Point near Sonora Island, just above Campbell River.

Minke Whales

August 8:
1:20 pm One Minke Whale popped up just outside Booker Lagoon, off Fife Sound, to feed around the reefs. I believe this one is known as 'Bolt'. It was doing very short, small lunges, gulping some fish and continuing towards Wells Pass.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

August 9:
1:15 pm Over 100 PWS Dolphins around Denham Bay, Dent Rapids area.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

August 9:
1:30 pm 6 – 8 Pacific White Sided Dolphins stopped and rested in a kelp patch for a few minutes then disappeared off Sunday Harbour.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

August 8:
12:26 pm 12+ PWS Dolphins at Ripple Point playing and foraging doing circles!
Later: 100+ PWS Dolphins milling and fishing at Hall Point, Nodales Channel and another 12 or so at Kanish Bay doing the same thing.
Scotty, Painters Lodge

August 8:
7:22 pm 100+ Lags in Denham Bay!
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

Dall's Porpoise

August 7, 8 and 9:
Dall's all over – playful – bowriding, wake riding and just foraging.

August 8:
There was a large group of Dall's Porpoise just outside Telegraph Cove that seemed to spread from Blinkhorn all the way down East below Robson Bight.
Afternoon: 4 Dall's came flying through and disappeared after I watched the Minke Whale – SM

August 8:
9:40 am Pod of 12 or so Dall's Porpoise by Naka Creek. Really playful. I stopped the boat and they jumped all around us. They were a super happy little pod!
Later: Little pod of Dall's at the mouth of Bute Inlet foraging – they've been pretty steady there all week.
Scotty, Painter's Lodge

August 7:
Late Afternoon: 4 Dall's between Whitecliffe and Sunday Harbour, 2 Dall's in Sunday Harbour, 2-4 Dall's in Marsden Passage, 2 Dall's beside Joe's Cove.

Harbour Porpoise

August 7:
11:13 am Lots of Harbour Porpoise out here, just below Campbell River.
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

Unusual Sightings
Great White Shark
Sperm Whales

August 7:
Morning: 2 Whales that had every indication of being Sperm Whales were seen just off Pine Island, Queen Charlotte Strait.
Cruise Ship Volendam

Around August 1st:
Received report on the 8th: While fishing off Duval Point, at the entrance to Port Hardy, there was a large bait ball and an 18+ foot long Great White Shark lunged into the middle of it slashing back and forth with it's mouth open grabbing fish.
Although a second hand report, the fisherman was adamant that after checking all possibilities on line and in books, that this actually was a Great White Shark.

To answer the questions these sightings raise:
Yes, there have on occasion been Great White Sharks in waters close to the open ocean such as Prince Rupert and Port Hardy.
Sperm Whales were hunted to near complete extinction. This would be a significant sighting and an indication that our oceans are recovering from our abuse.
And No, unfortunately no photos were taken or submitted.

Transient (Bigg's) Orca by Campbell River Plus Many More Sightings

Hot weather, coastal morning fog has been the scenario in upper Georgia Strait and Johnstone Strait. In Georgia Strait it's been slower than usual for Orca till today and in Johnstone Strait, it was whales by braille, a term used in the kindest sense. The Resident Orca headed out West while the Transient (Bigg's) Killer Whales reappeared. Humpbacks are in abundance in the upper Johnstone Strait, but not as many as this time last year, while the Pacific White Sided Dolphins have spread out, but are still seen in numbers of 100 or more. A few Dall's and Harbour Porpoise sightings, including ones killed by Transient (Bigg's) Orca, a few Minke Whales, and a Fin Whale Sighting round out the reports.

August 6:
9:54 am A36's suddenly popped up by Cracroft Point in the fog. They were heading up Blackfish Sound to meet up with some other Orca, probably the A11's and maybe more.
Later in the day: All Orca had grouped up and were still headed West well past Bear Point, Malcolm Island. This was more by sound than sight due to the fog.

August 5:
9 am The A36 brothers were in Nodales Channel.
1 pm Left the Orca Westbound by Howe Island.
3:15 pm Found them again on the way back, still around Howe Island foraging.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

August 5:
9:45 am A36's showed up in Nodales Channel, I was on scene at approximately 9:45 at Sonora Point Westing slowly. We left them at Davis Point foraging at 10:45 am.
12:20 pm Sounds like they are at Thurston Bay heading West with the ebb now.
5:55 pm A36's turned and went back into Nodales Channel. Just left them again by Sonora Point. Might head back after Bute Inlet to check on them.
7:15 pm Last update...the A36's Nodales shuffle put them Westing again at Sonora Point.
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

August 4:
10 am Orca – A36's + ?? were Eastbound into Blackfish Sound. Yes, fog.
Another report of Orca Eastbound by Lizard Point, Malcolm Island.
11:11 am Orca Eastbound nicely towards Donagal Head, Blackfish Sound – fog is thick, but lifting.
2:30 – 5:30 pm The A36 boys were still in the Bight, but finally started heading out and to the East.
In the meantime: the A30's were Westbound by Round Island, just off Port Hardy.
8:25 pm The A36's were very slowly working their way East between Naka Creek and Adam River.

August 6:
1:21 pm 4 Orcas in Brown's Bay, Campbell River heading for the Narrows now. They were moving rather quickly. Last I heard they were reported at Ripple Point. then to Duncan Bay. Here they were doing the three blows before a deep dive. They did stay down a long time her as well as Ripple Point/Copper point.. Hope they return south.

Fin Whale

August 5:
5:30 pm A report of a possible Fin Whale feeding for about an hour off the lower reefs in Pearse Passage. After heading out to help search for the whale, I had just returned to Salt Wash and received a call that Erin and Rob caught a quick grab shot to confirm it's species close to Port McNeill around 7:20 pm. They lost it after that. It's amazing how easily a very large animal like that can disappear so easily.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Humpback Whales

August 4, 5 and 6:
Throughout the days the Humpback Whales are usually in and around the 'golden triangle' between Stubbs Island, Donagal Head, Bold Head and over to the Plumper Islands. There are two regulars who venture into Weynton Pass and feed in the tide rips. These two are known as 'Argonaught' and 'Black Pearl'. There are forays out of this triangle other than Weynton Pass, with at least one enjoying the tidal rips at Blackney Pass, the bottom of Blackfish Sound. The ones by Bold Head, not sure if it's only Mom and calf, tend to head over towards the Whitecliffe Islets and there was one report from as far afield as Lizard Point, Malcolm Island. The total numbers are remaining around 6 Humbacks so far confirmed. With the fog in the mornings, some of the reports have been by hearing their blows rather than seeing the animal.

Minke Whales

August 4, 5 and 6:
There has only been one reported sighting of a Minke Whale, that I'm aware of each of the days. Unusual since there were so many just over a week ago. One report was of a Minke headed towards Alert Bay from the Port McNeill area, another at the top of Pearse Pass and another out by Lizard Point, Malcolm Island.

Dall's Porpoise

August 4, 5 and 6:
There are daily sightings of groups of Dall's Porpoise foraging in the rips of Weynton Pass, around Stubbs Island and over to the Plumpers as well as some down by Blackney Pass also in the rips. See the Transient Orca report of at least one taken off Cracroft Point, Blackney Pass. The groups that are seen vary anywhere from 3 to 10 animals at any one time.

Harbour Porpoise

The little Harbour Porpoise gets quite neglected in reports when there are so many other Cetacean sightings, but one specific sights report did come in – thank you! See also the Transient Orca report for another one taken off Cape Mudge, Campbell River.

August 4:
9:24 am Hi – Saw a harbour porpoise heading north in Cordova Bay.(Haro Strait) He/she was about 40 meters off shore travelling slowly. I did not see a pod, just one. Cheers,

Throughout the day: the R4's, A11's, I15's and A30's were spread out all over Blackfish Sound then Johnstone Strait foraging, went back towards the Bight, when around 1 pm the R4's and I15's popped up in Weynton Pass while the rest were close to the Bight. These Resident Whales also turned back to the bight till 6 pm when the R4's, on their own were spotted by the Stephenson Islets at the bottom of Weynton Pass. They continued West in Johnstone Strait and I left them around 7:30 pm still headed West past Alert Bay. Overnight: The I15's and A11's possibly joined the R4's to head out West into Queen Charlotte Strait.
The R's are not regularly seen in the area so it was a treat – I also managed to get some great vocal recordings. Their vocals are quite a bit different than the A Clan or G Clan calls. I'm working on getting a few short audio clips up – SM

Humpback Whale Known as 'Chunky' and Her New Baby

Some great photos of Humpback 'Chunky' and her new calf. Being out with a Humpback Whale lunge feeding till late has delayed the Sightings update but will make sure it's caught up tomorrow.

The photos below are of a Humpback Whale known as 'Chunky' BCX081 taken close to Kelsey Bay. I look forward to see her every year since 2002 when she first showed up in front of Savary Island in November. She stayed the winter in the Georgia Strait which is unusual since she appeared healthy. There is thought that she had a calf that may have been too ill to make the trip to Mexico or Hawaii, which is why she stayed initially. And by the time the calf passed away, it was too late for her to continue so she chose to stay. This is the second calf I am aware of that she has had since 2002. The first in 2005: BCX871 and then in 2008: BCR94 Now in 2012, there has been no identification number given as yet – but soon.

Resident Orca Take Center Stage - Other Sightings Too

Northern Resident Orca are taking center stage with their appearances. And rumour has it that there are more of them coming into the Broughton / Johnstone Strait area. The Transient Orca – Bigg's Killer Whales are doing a good job of keeping a low profile, which they do when the Residents are around. I have seen them pass one another going in opposite directions in Johnstone Strait, but both groups hug the opposite shore as they do. They do not mingle and tend to avoid one another. The Residents usually would have the upper hand since they regularly travel in greater numbers and are tighter knit family pods. They frequently touch one another as they travel. There are still plenty of Humpback Whales, Pacific White Sided Dolphins, some Minke Whales and Porpoise in the reports.

Pacific White Sided Dolphin Mom and Calf Photo & Whale Sightings

Sightings reports of Northern Resident Killer Whales, Transient Orca, (Bigg's Killer Whale) sightings, Humpback and Minke Whales, Pacific White Sided Dolphins, including a photo of a Mom and Calf leaping together, and Dall's Porpoise. I have summarized the radio reports received throughout the day or this blog would be miles long, but the individual reports are as submitted. During the summer 'season' for whale watching, there are so many boats passing information that it's difficult sometime to keep track of who said what unless they specifically submit a report.

July 29:
8:40 am Orca Westing from bottom of Robson Bight Ecological Reserve.
9 am 4 Orca at Swaine Point Light and 1 Orca, possibly more in the Bight.
Till after 7 pm The A36's and A11's continued to Blackney Pass, not very far at all, and stopped to forage. They continued West along the Hanson Island shore as far as Weynton Pass to a spot that a few years back was dubbed “Turn Point” since that's where the whales usually made their turn back East. They did the expected, and turned. Spread right across Johnstone Strait they worked their way back towards Cracroft Point and the Sophia Islands at Blackney Pass. They've stopped to socialize and continue to fish. Apparently they are being quite vocal still.
8:20 pm Orca still by the Sophia Islands with A75's calf rolling around on the surface, playing.

July 28:
9:15 am Report that the 2 A36 brothers had been spotted just out from Lizard Point, Malcolm Island.
By 11:30 am It was confirmed that the A11's were together with the A36's, in the fog, and had made their way East into Blackfish Sound continuing past Flower Island towards Cracroft Point. They would slow to forage and vocalize as they worked their way towards Robson Bight Ecological Reserve.
5:45 pm A36's and A11's still in the Bight having a good rub on the beaches.
7 pm The Orca came out of the Bight and started West for a bit, but turned back towards Cracroft Point and the Bight.
7:40 pm They turned again – must be some good food!

10 am till 1 pm Here are 3 pics (one posted tonight - SM) from today's trip with the A-36's, A-11's and Humpbacks in Blackfish sound And Blackney Pass today! Was a chilly ride up but flat as a pond both ways! Nice to see the N/W Winds gone! We arrived on scene with the 36's and 11's in a picture perfect resting line pattern slowly rolling through the fog in Blackfish Sound. Followed them East as they headed for Blackney Pass and some foraging with the 3 humpbacks that were there as well! Some vocals and foraging then grouped up with A-11 in the lead they headed east for the Bight. When we left to head for the barn, they were abeam the Cliff! Great day, Cheers!

Transient Orca – Bigg's Killer Whales

July 28:
Mark and I were sitting on the deck tonight and noticed 3 Orca at 8:10 pm just in front of the Westview wharf. They proceeded to slowly follow a tide line towards Grief Point. 2 females and a male in the pod. A couple of tail slaps and some surface resting were seen. They were doing shallow dives and were on the surface a lot. Got some great looks with the spotting scope when they were right in front of the house. My brother Mark from California thinks this is normal seeing Orca 2 times in 3 days in Powell River. He's the only one of our visitors that ever has. Take care up there!
Steve Grover, Powell River

July 26:
I was lucky enough to encounter another pod of orca on July 26th at approximately 5pm just off the southeastern tip of Harwood Island, Powell River. There were what looked to be about six (four together and another two off a ways) traveling south. I got a couple of shots, but so far have been unable to identify any of them. There was a large male that I thought was T020, but my photos are pretty far off and aren't quite at the proper angle to be sure. Happy Orca Hunting,
Jessica Dohm

July 17:
2:25 pm The location was Lewis channel between Cortez Island and West Redonda Island. We were averaging about 4 knots Northbound, so 4 nautical miles South of Cortez Northern tip in Lewis Channel would put your pin pretty close. We never did see the tail. There would be a blow, with no body apparent – then the dorsal fin for about three seconds – then gone. Repeated several times about 1 minute intervals from the picture times. I’ve been pouring over dorsal fin photo’s and profiles for days, and I just wasn’t getting anywhere that I had confidence in. You have been very helpful and I can’t adequately express our gratitude.
Rob Ridley
(I looked at some of the photos Rob sent and let him know that he had seen a Humpback Whale. The surprise was when he sent another photo, I realized that there were actually 2 different Humpbacks! One of them looks like 'Arial's' dorsal. – SM)
Rob's Earlier Email:
My Brother and I were recently on a sailing trip around Cortez Island –and we were blessed with a sighting of a whale – clearly not one of the oft seen orcas. I’m hoping you can shed some light. We would really like to know what we’ve seen. I’m attaching the pictures unedited in the hope you can zoom in and offer some guidance. I don’t know if it helps, but we both guessed 10 to 12 feet from blow to dorsal fin, though there is a time lapse that might affect that judgement.
Thanks for any help you can offer – and thanks for your support of cetaceans.

They seemed to be slowly moving towards Mittlenatch Island. We saw some tail lobbing, spy hopping and other playful activity. Transients will and do kill Minke Whales, but I believe these Transients were too busy socializing to take notice – fortunate Minke!
