Orca – Killer Whales

An Anonymous 'comment' posted to the Sightings report that this Orca was seen near Gambier Island – no other details I'm afraid, but the report and photo were

April 1:
9:50 am While kayaking today in Jervis Inlet crossing between Egmont Point and Goliath Bay, we were mesmerized by a Line dance of ~100 Pacific White Sided Dolphins working their way across the channel, from West to East, with South most individuals off Captain Island in a line stretching North up to Saumarez Bluff. They worked their way to the Eastern shore and then proceeded North, finally appearing to close up into a large ring off in the distance. Quite the show.

March 31: (rec'd April 2)
Sorry for the late posting; Early Saturday (Mar 31) morning, we were treated to a sight we don't often see in Sechelt Inlet. At the entrance to Narrow Inlet, we were surrounded by a large pod of pacific white sided dolphins. They were spread across the width of the inlet and travelling towards Skookumchuck Narrows. They're hard to count, but we estimate a group close to 100. It's a beautiful sight to see 4 dolphins jumping simultaneously. Beats hopping Easter bunnies any day!
Here is our attempt at trying to capture extremely fast moving targets.

Resident Orca Take Center Stage - Other Sightings Too

Northern Resident Orca are taking center stage with their appearances. And rumour has it that there are more of them coming into the Broughton / Johnstone Strait area. The Transient Orca – Bigg's Killer Whales are doing a good job of keeping a low profile, which they do when the Residents are around. I have seen them pass one another going in opposite directions in Johnstone Strait, but both groups hug the opposite shore as they do. They do not mingle and tend to avoid one another. The Residents usually would have the upper hand since they regularly travel in greater numbers and are tighter knit family pods. They frequently touch one another as they travel. There are still plenty of Humpback Whales, Pacific White Sided Dolphins, some Minke Whales and Porpoise in the reports.

More Baby Orca Photos, Humpback and More

More photos of the New Transient Orca Calf. Humpback Whale 'KC' or 'Kelp Creature' has been doing his/her kelp play. A couple of other Transients, Dall's and Harbour Porpoise sightings. Looks like the Pacific White Sided Dolphins went to Kelsey Bay, Johnstone Strait and above while the Northern Resident Orca are still above Johnstone Strait somewhere.

Here are some pics of the T002C Gang with the new calf! These were taken today during our encounter starting at 1030hrs and ending at approx 1300hrs.They were travelling up Discovery Passage Northbound then went right thru Kanish Bay at the top of Quadra Island. There may have been a seal kill near the end as there was some feeding activity and birds around after. The calf is the smallest I have seen for sure, looking more like a dolphin! Also a shot of T002C2 that i thought really showed her scoliosis (This photo of T02C2 will be in the next Sightings posting - SM). They are my favorite gang of T's, love that T002c had the new calf, cheers!

In between these two reports I was listening to a few comments about this whale rolling, slapping it's pectoral fin and playing in and with the kelp – possibly 'KC' again.

Puget Sound Reports

September 28
Today around 2pm we found members of our resident pods K and L, almost 50 whales, spread out in Haro Strait heading up to Turn Point. We were able to identify K20, L87, L41, L88, and K40. We got to see a wide range of behaviors and all our passengers were very excited. On the way home we stopped along Spieden and saw many harbor seals on the rocks, as well as four-legged mammals grazing on the hillside including some bucks and a few rams. The icing on the cake was the Bald Eagle standing on the shore line with a salmon in its talons, and a handful of Steller Sea Lions lazing in the water at Green Point.

Beam Reach students were with resident orcas off Hannah Heights, southwest San Juan Island at 11:01 am to northern Haro Strait between Henry Island and Stuart Island at 3:30 pm.
