Orca News! Another calf spotted for the Southern Resident Killer Whales J-Pod! The population was in desperate need of a boost and we welcome J-052! This is incredibly good news for their population. Farther up the coast, we have Transient Bigg's Orca making appearances with Pacific White Sided Dolphins near by, plus a few other unconfirmed identities of whales. We are still expecting to get reports very soon of Humpback Whales coming through our inside waters, while Gray Whales are already migrating up the outer coast of Vancouver Island.

We received a second quote from another company for our live feed web camera which shaved $1600 off the original quote for the same camera! We are working on options since it is still very expensive.

SOUTHERN RESIDENT KILLER WHALES:

March 30: Just got a report that the Southern Resident Killer Whales known as J-pod were in Active Pass earlier today. There is a rumour of a possible new calf! J052. (which has been confirmed – Exciting News! - SM)

April 1:
11:35 am: Orca near Johnston Bluff, in Bute Inlet. Not on scene yet, but report says there are 4 – 5 Orca.

12:33 pm: 3-4 Orca by Stuart Island heading into Bute Inlet. All small fins.
1:49 pm Turned out to be only 3 Orca, all small fins, one was very small but no yellowing.

3:47 pm: Six Transient Bigg's Orca in Juan de Fuca Strait. heading east of Beachy Head, off Sooke on Vancouver Island.

12:00 pm: Lone Orca heading north at Bolmont Shoals in Haro Strait.
10:09 pm: The lone Orca turned out to be two Orca – Transient Bigg's T011 and T011A – someone I know ID'd them and sent the info to me.

3:04 pm: Five Transient Bigg's Killer Whales heading west at Beecher Bay, near Sooke on South Vancouver Island.

Transient Bigg's Killer Whales known as T101s and T124C were sighted heading south in Trincomali Channel, which is between Saltspring and Galiano Islands.

March 30:
8:00 pm: At least 2 big fins earlier today in Blind Channel, West Thurlow Island. (presumed to be Transient Bigg's, but no confirmation - SM)

I just wanted to report that I have seen a pod of what looks to be like Killer Whales. (These could be either Southern Resident or Transient Bigg's Orca – SM) I first spotted them on Friday and was able to capture some video of them (not great quality), and saw them again this evening. I saw them in the area just off Benwalden Road in Lantzville outside of the “Bay” by Nanoose First Nations and the Navy Base. My neighbour and I were trying to count and I would say between 5 – 7 whales! It was so amazing to see. When I saw them they were just spending time going back and forth in the Bay area so not sure which direction they ended up going. Thanks for all you do,

Wow! Sunday saw at least 5 or 6 Orca feeding on herring in Nanoose Bay! At least two were babies. They followed two herring fishing boats for about 1 hour in a rather shallow area of Nanoose Bay, between Nanoose Bay Spit and Lantzville Beach on Vancouver Island.

GRAY WHALES

Mar 25: I am in Ucluelet, west coast of Vancouver Island, for my Spring whale watching trip. Saw about 1/2 a dozen Grays off the Lighthouse headed west yesterday afternoon. I am going to Tofino today as the big boat here is not going out today but I will go out on Jamie's big boat there.

9:52 am: Pacific White Sided Dolphins in Seymour Narrows, north of Campbell River in Discovery Passage, northbound.

Shortly after 10 am: Web cam capture shows at least 25 Pacific White Sided Dolphins in Brown's Bay, which is just north of Campbell River on Vancouver Island, and about 50 more Dolphins on the other side.

A resident of Hornby Island was out kayaking when he caught this footage of a couple of Transient Bigg's Orca hunting sea lions.

Great aerial footage by Jeremy Williams using a drone during the herring spawn in Powell River. Sea Lions were playing and feeding in the spawn.

Cetacean Sightings: Transient Bigg's Orca Popping up and Four other Species

Transient Bigg's Killer Whales popping up everywhere! Other Cetacean sightings in this report include Southern Resident Orca, Humpback Whales, Pacific White Sided Dolphins and some Dall's Porpoise.

Approx. 11:20 am Orca reported (3rd hand and relayed) at the “top end” of Cortez Island. Jos Krijnen and Garry Henkel

1:03 pm 10+ Orca found between Cortez Island and Center Islet by Plunger Pass.
They are in small groups spread out at least 16 of them.

1:50 pm Another group of 4 or 5 Orca in Whale Pass slowly Northbound towards Calm Channel / Rendezvous Islands. Looks like a very small calf with them.

1:59 pm Rest of the 20 or so Orca are by the scallop farm off Quadra island, Sutil Channel side. 2:15 pm left the T18's and T19B 1 mile North of Francisco Point, 400 meters off the Quadra Island shore. Southbound.
3 pm Headed to Whale Pass and left the 4 Orca plus small calf circumnavigating Penn Island by Cortez. Don't think this is a new calf, since it doesn't appear to have the usual orangy tinge, but it is small.
4:28 pm 1 Orca at the North end of Cortez Island. Seen it two times and then not again....phantom female Orca.

8:20 pm Found 12-14 Orca between Penn Islands and Bullock Bluff off the North-West side of Cortez Island. For sure we had T86A's and T20. T20 breached 5 times with the sun (glaring) behind! Left them doing donuts in the same spot and my way back 9:16 pm. Will look at photos for other ID's back at the barn.

June 6:
11:30 AM today two Orcas were proceeding close to the mainland (500m) going NW by Savary's eastern point (Mace Point). They appeared to be a large bull and a smaller male. I spotted the Orcas from my boat while fishing. Unfortunately did not have my camera. The Orcas seemed to be heading steadily NW ward. This would be the second time I have seen Orca from my boat.

11:55 am Orca Northbound in Malaspina Strait.
3:44 pm 4 Orca between Rona and the Red Can Buoy, Willow Point area below Campbell River angling towards Vancouver Island shore.
5:30 pm 5 Orca Southbound by Sentry Shoal, SW of Savary Island.

12:13 pm Some Orca right out in front of Westview Harbour in Powell River. At least one big male and a couple of females. They're angling straight in towards shore.
1:15 pm Could see 4 of them Northbound – looks like they're heading towards the Powell River mill.

A short time later, they're just below Atrevida Reef, but North of Sliammon.

There were 4 Orca including T20 (photo) and T86's doing long dives and continuing North slowly. Around 5 pm they stopped for a seal snack, a couple of breaches and spy hops. 6 pm I left the Orca in Thulin Pass by the Copeland Islands still Northbound.

June 5:
A small pod of about 4 Orcas at 7:15 pm between Piper's Lagoon and The Shack Islands in Nanaimo. Two adults and possibly a juvenile or two, we were on kayak and they surprised us as much as we surprised them. They surfaced twice before disappearing. We were about 50 ft away and as many times as I've seen them, they're beautiful, majestic and frightening. We were close enough to see details in they're markings. They were headed north when we initially saw them but lost sight after they submerged. They most likely headed out to more open water as they were extremely close to the shore and there were a few motor boats in the immediate area.

Loggers I spoke to in Ramsay Arm, above Desolation Sound saw some Orca in close to the logging operation and witnessed what they felt may have been the birth of a calf. They saw an extremely tiny calf very pink and orange.

Humpback Whales

June 9:
2-3 humpback whales at junction of Raymond Pass and Seaforth Channel, west of Bella Bella; several breaches close to shore. The whales appeared to be moving west across the top of Raymond Pass but at least 1 was just hanging out in a small cove and then at the confluence of the two bodies of water – lots of tide and wind stirring up the waters.

3 pm 12 or so PWS Dolphins foraging by Granite Point, Discovery Passage.
3:35 pm Around 100 PSW Dolphins by Separation Head, fast foraging and feeding back and forth. They went right into Brown's Bay. Left them still running back and forth at 4 pm by Brown's Bay.

4:10 pm Another 8-9 PWS Dolphins at Marina Reef, by Cortez Island, Northbound and foraging.

Transient (Bigg's) Killer Whales plus A8 Calf Photo

Transient (Bigg's) Orca by Powell River, Thormanby and Sechelt. Other reports indicate that there may have been more Transient (Bigg's) Killer Whales down by Cowichan today. Wonder where the Northern Resident A8 pod with their new calf went to. Another photo of the A8's with their new calf as well as photos from today. 10 am 4 or 5 Orca just out between Grief Point and Texada Island heading Southward. There's 4 for sure – looks like 2 larger fins and two smaller ones.

10:30 am Spotted 4 Orca heading south past VanAnda on Texada. 0ne large with a thick dorsal fin and 3 smaller ones. They stopped briefly resting on the surface.

Right after Holly called and it sounded like they weren't speeding down Malaspina Strait, I hopped out on the skiff to see who we might have. They split up with two tight to Texada's shore and the other two continued down mid-strait. I left them around 11:40 am passing Lang Bay with their noses pointed towards Sechelt.

Just days after saying I never see orcas off Sechelt, three went by Davis Bay at low tide this afternoon around 3.30 pm. Yes, mum and I were driving north and saw a woman with a camera-day was very dull so I thought she was nuts..... then we saw a bunch more and even the ambulance had stopped to look so we went around the block and parked and there they were three dorsals heading south, last sighted by White Island.

January 12: (late report)
Were in behind Harwood on Sat. saw a orca and calf, followed them a bit until a orca showed up with twice the size dorsal fin, and the mom and calf just disappeared. Need to figure my camera out, missed some awesome shots.

Dolphin entangled in some line asks for help from divers. This is an amazing video clip.

Two links to different reports and one with video clips of the Orca that were trapped in the ice in Hudson Bay. Reportedly a plane did eventually spot them clear of the ice.
