Sea Otters are not a common sight in our coastal inner waters, but the past few years they have been showing up. The Transient Bigg's Orca, the meat eaters, sometimes take them, but they certainly have been taking seals and hunting Pacific White Sided Dolphins.
The Humpback Whales try to avoid confrontation with the Bigg's, but will take them on to protect their calves, and even other species. (see previous Magazine section reports). All our usual species of Cetacea seem to be spread out within our inner waterways, but the Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whales, the fish eaters, are staying nearer their respective top and bottom of Vancouver Island areas.

Our first Real Time Monitoring Station is coming together with the last few customized components. Every aspect to this install needs to be a co-ordinated group effort.
We are calling for volunteers to help us complete this project in the Powell River area. Our needs are electrical, internet connectivity, concrete and fibreglass work, a couple of spare strong hands, and possibly some welding. We will co-ordinate with our diver volunteers as the project evolves.

A group of about 10 orcas put on quite the show for the crew of a container ship in the Boundary Pass strait in B.C. on Aug. 23.

Marine biologists and fishery officers were in Cowichan Bay and surrounding waters over the weekend looking for a sick humpback whale that was spotted in the area.
The whale was obviously ill when it was first seen on Aug. 20, but it’s been reported that a visual inspection of the marine mammal by a diver at the time showed no obvious injuries or net entanglement.
The whale has not been seen since, and DFO and marine biologists are asking the public’s help in locating the animal....

There are some big differences, too. The ocean is big, deep, dark, and wet. So whales interact mostly by sounds when they can’t see each other, and travel distances much larger than any of the protected areas in which primates are studied in the wild.
