Transient Bigg's Orca family known as the T002Cs have been staying in the upper Georgia Strait and coming close and briefly mixing with a few other Bigg's. No Resident pods of Killer Whales reported in any area along our inside waters. Humpback Whales, in particular the two siblings BCY0291 KC and BCY0767 Arial keep putting on a show for people as are a number of other Humpbacks in various spots. Pacific White Sided Dolphins keep the viewers entertained with their leaps and bow riding as are some Dall's Porpoise while some shy Harbour Porpoise are popping up briefly. Appears the Grey Whales have moved off to better and perhaps safer feeding areas.

While less dramatic then the action packed video below of a disentaglement team working to free a Fin Whale off the Massachusetts Coast, another first-of-its-kind rescue operation resumed July 28th off the coast of Southern California as crews attempt to disentangle an 80-foot-long (24 meter) blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) from crab trap lines.
The entangled whale was spotted on Monday afternoon about three to four miles (four to six and a half kilometers) off the coast of Orange County, California. Initially reported by a whale watching vessel operated by Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari, the whale appeared to have 100 to 200 feet (30 to 60 meters) of crabbing lines and buoys wound around it.

More than 8,000 ships ply the waters of the St. Lawrence River estuary in Canada each year, putting at risk beluga whales, minke whales, blue whales, humpback whales, and fin whales that frequent the waterway. Many have died from collisions.
But since 2013, there have been no whale deaths from ship strikes. That’s because instead of imposing regulations on ship owners, the government worked with the industry and scientists to develop ways to minimize collisions.

Science Daily VIDEO
VIDEO We're delighted to make available this engrossing and impressive 2013 presentation by Conservation photographer Bryant Austin, the only photographer in the world producing high-resolution, life-size photography of whales.
A chance encounter with a humpback calf and its mother helped Austin develop a technique to create detailed, intimate portraits of his subjects. Spending days at a time submerged with groups of whales, he remains motionless, allowing humpback, sperm, and minke whales that are sometimes forty-five feet in length and weigh as much as fifty tons to come within six feet. In this presentation, Austin will describe his fearless process and reveal images from his breathtaking new book, Beautiful Whale, which will be published in April 2013 by Abrams. Hear the story behind these impactful images that inspire people to take the future of whales-endangered throughout the oceans-into their hearts.

A new online archive with thousands of underwater recordings of marine mammal calls—from the tuneful mating songs of humpback whales to the explosive clicks and pops of hunting seals—is now available to anyone who wants to study and listen to them.
Along with around 1,800 master tapes, the archive features 18,000 audio extracts of the calls of dozens of marine mammals species, as well as information on when and where they were recorded.
The collection is part of the legacy of a scientist and bioacoustics specialist named William Watkins, who during a career spanning more than four decades pioneered the science and technology of underwater recording,

Nobody knew what the young killer whale was saying to astonished whale watchers Sunday off Monterey, Calif. “But he sure was saying it,” states the naturalist who videotaped the extraordinary encounter.

The Marine Animal Entanglement Response (MAER) team from the Provincetown based Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) worked to disentangle a large fin whale on Stellwagen Bank, east of Boston. The nearly 60 foot long whale was swimming with the entanglement – a large loop of fishing rope and buoys – lodged in its mouth. When the MAER team arrived they found the whale traveling slowly with a series of buoys trailing nearly 70 feet behind its tail.
The responders used a thrown grappling hook, with sixty feet of line and a large buoy, to add a working line to the entanglement. When the whale dove it took...
