Long Cetacean Sightings Update

Northern Resident Killer Whales are in the Straits in numbers with some working their way back and forth from Nodales Channel to the upper Johnstone Strait. Transient Bigg's appear to have been staying farther South, but have been quite stealthy for most part. Humpback Whales, on the other hand have been popping up in all sorts of locations along our inside waters. We have fewer than expected Pacific White Sided Dolphins, Dall's and Harbour Porpoise to report, but we do have a couple of unconfirmed sightings of Fin and Minke Whales. Rumours have been flying about the NRKW's known as the A36 brothers, 'Plumper' A37 has been sick for quite a while and we have been closely following his status. Unfortunately, once he and his brother came into the upper Johnstone Strait, there is no open conversation of how he's is actually doing or where he was actually last seen. We hope to find out for the next report. There is a likelihood that he is gone, but we thought that a couple of times before, and so far cannot confirm it. In our Links, we have the latest on the disentanglement of one of the NRKW's from the I15's who was caught in a fisherman's net the other day.

Bradden Kiley, Painter's Lodge.

Aug 22:
10:25 am: Saw two whale watching boats sitting tight just off Fanny Island, just across from Kelsey Bay, Johnstone Strait, and went over to see what they were looking at. Just in time to see a Humpback circling around a bit, and then doing a full breach. Amazing!
10:40 am: The Humpback has breached for a second time – nothing like seeing thirty odd tons of whale suspended in the sky to make your day! At the same time we saw what looked like a second blow closer to the Vancouver Island shore, nearer to the Brasseau Bay area, but couldn't confirm that.
11:15 am: There are two Humpback Whales in the area. One closer to Millie Island, in front of Port Neville and the other one (I think KC) closer to Fanny Island.
Lynne Cracknell, Whales and Dolphins BC.

Aug 22:
10:56 am: The Humpback off Fanny island is K.C.

Aug 22:

11:23 am: KC is right on Earl's Ledge and the second Humpback is between Helmken Island and Earl's Ledge and they are both sort of westing.
11:45 am: The second Humpback just did a full breach out from Kelsey Bay. I was watching through binoculars to see the tail flukes, so missed the photo!
5:15 pm Looks like at least one of the two Humpback Whales are continuing up Johnstone Strait, as I saw a blow mid strait just up from Port Neville.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC.

Aug 21:
9:35 am: There is a Humpback whale just off Brasseau Bay just above Kelsey Bay, Johnstone Strait.

Bradden Kiley, Painters Lodge.

Aug 21:
10:17 am: Humpback mid channel southbound at the Mill, Campbell River.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whales and Grizzly Bear Tours.

Aug 20:
11:45 am: Humpback doing donuts and making shallow dives off Earls Ledge identified definitely as K.C.
5:00 pm: Saw the second reported Humpback briefly crossing from Camp Point to Vere Cove, Johnstone Strait. Still managed one tail fluke photo for ID. Went into the cove and poof – disappeared! May have taken Chancellor Channel due to the current push. The second Humpback is “Stripe” - looks like KC and Stripe are possibly hanging out together again this year.

August 10: (rec'd late)
Last Sunday, approximately 0930, a single Humpback about 100 m. offshore Hornby Island just south of Grassy Point, travelling slowly north and then turned westward as it rounded the Point. It was certainly a major treat for us. The grapevine up here reports intermittent sightings around Flora Islets at the SE corner of Hornby, but I have no details.

FIN WHALE AND MINKE WHALE
(unconfirmed)

August 19 rec'd email:
In desolation sound for past weeks. Minke solitary, Lewis Channel off Refuge Cove entrance, seaford, marten island and tenedos bay.
After asking for more details and / or photos (none received): ..... I was unsure myself as there were and are Humpbacks in the area. Specifically, the sicle-shaped dorsal fin was the most distinct feature as well as a greyness to the surface of the back just forward of the fin. The whale was feeding and did not expose more than the area just forward of the fin through to area forward of the tail flukes. The flukes were visible only a couple of times and we were both sure that we only saw dark colouration. I searched many photos in different sources, as pale seems to be most common, but there seems to be a lot of variation. No photos as we were 5:30 am just following exhalation sounds that had wakened me. Yesterday a very knowlegable person... must be as he agreed with me... independently noted that he had seen a Minke in Desolation. We compared notes and I am convinced. Today, as I was writing to you a person came into the gallery with the same story, and a video; sicle-shaped dorsal and dark underside of flukes, approx 25=feet only, smooth glossy skin more like dolphin etc. She will forward iphoto image when she returns home. Minke Whale was on south eastern tip of Cortes Island, a bit south of my sighting and west.
Sandie Ross D'xon

August 19 (rec'd email):
On Aug 18th we found a very large whale at the junction of Pryce Channel. Homfray Channel and Toba Inlet mouth. We initially thought there were two whales but in the end it was one laying on the surface fairly stationary. We never did see a jaw or tail but saw it blow, roll forward showing small fin and twice it rolled showing flukes. Finally we saw a whoosh of red liquid suspended within which were creamy white globules. We moved off at this point. There was a small log that remained close to the whale back. We were concerned and amazed. Any information would be helpful. We are experienced coastal travellers and local to the area. It was not a Humpback. We did once see a Fin Whale off Malcolm Island.
After we asked for more details and / or photos (none received); the reply:
I did pass this on to a govt office and they said I checked off all the Fin Whale check points. Photos taken with an iPad proved useless. We are pretty sure of id. Final decision made on basis of time between blow. back roll forward and sight of small fin. The back is very long and it takes a while to see fin. That's all I can tell you. Thanks,
Judy Williams.
