Transients and Dolphins by Powell River

Transient (meat eating) Killer Whales together with Pacific White Sided Dolphins off Powell River! It's a dangerous, for the dolphins, mix. It was difficult to get some other work done and not watch out the window while the dolphins and Orca were heading towards one another. Unfortunately I couldn't get out on the water even though it was beautifully calm, but a couple of tours from came all the way to Powell River to see the Whales and Dolphins.
Note: the reports below will be mixed for species rather than duplicating them.

Gladys Raven, Powell River

9 am, 10:20 am and 11:30 am The dolphins, estimated at around 80 were still feeding back and forth from Sliammon to in front of the ferry terminal by Powell River. They did spend some time leaping and doing their usual play / feed patterns, but stayed in front of Powell River.
Susan MacKay

Hi Susan Thanks for the heads up this morning. I went to the lookout shortly after getting off the phone with you around 10:30 this morning and saw 150-200 dolphins making their way south. They then turned and moved in towards the ferry and Willingdon beach where I left them at about 11:15. Lots of leaps and milling about, looked like they were feeding as there were lots of birds above them. Then a boat came and pushed them towards the west end of Harwood. What a great way to spend the morning!
Nicole Robertson, Powell River

11:30 am A call came in that at least 3 Orca, all small fins were spotted off Atrevida Reef just North of Powell River and Sliammon headed towards Powell River.
Kim Liseberg (sp?), Savary Island/Lund

12 pm Dolphins, I think were using a tug and tow to hide off the Powell River mill and were now heading slowly Southward towards Grief Point.
Susan MacKay

12 pm At least 4 Orca which included at least one large male, were taking their time moving slowly Southward off Sliammon.
Steve Grover, Powell River

1 pm The first whale watching tour found the Orca just off Sliammon Creek. There were 7 whales including at least one small calf. Later, over the radio, it was confirmed that they had at least 8 whales with 2 calves and T02C.
Lee, (sorry Lee, you're new to this area, please email your other information to me for credit)

Transient Orca T02C, Harwood Island
April 29, 2012
Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

1 pm The Dolphins count was down to between 50 to 60 of the larger ones in front of the viewpoint in Powell River. They were bunched up pretty tightly and appeared not to know what direction (North or South) they wanted to go. I didn't see where the rest of them got to. I last saw them, still in front of the ferry terminal with their noses pointed Northward at around 2:30 pm.
Susan MacKay

3:30 pm Lee waited with the Transient Orca till Jen, Campbell River Whale Watching got on scene close in to Harwood Island and starting to pick up the pace a bit towards Rebecca Rocks, half way between Harwood and Texada Islands. They again stalled and soon after, Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures arrived on scene. He was with them till a bit after 4:15 pm. Nick contributed a number of great photos and links to a couple of his video / audio clips. Check out his report below.

4:15 pm Pacific White Sided Dolphins, numbers now back up to around 100, managed to sneak past the Orca, just across the passage, and were by Atrevida Reef heading Northward.
Jen, CR Whale Watching

The Lund Dolphins were seen around 16:00 hrs and were developing quite an entourage, so we did not follow along. Lund was treated to 25 to 30 dolphins cruising between Savary and the main land heading NW to Major rock. They were making good time and were soon out of site.

Transient Orca T023, Harwood Island

Nick Templeman, Eagle Eye Adventures

Hi Susan! We had an amazing day with this Gang of Orca today. There were 8 animals in Total, my rusty eyeballs can pick out T02C and T02C2 and T02C3 I think it is?! The rest I am leaving in your capable hands. (No time to check them all or send them off for verification yet – SM) Here is the link to some under water video and some amazing underwater vocals that I posted on you tube as well. I have a Swann HD mini camera in an underwater housing and didn't realize while it was happening but when we listened and watched the clips later on the computer the vocals were amazing!! The vocals and echo location came right thru the underwater camera housing and being underwater with no interference came thru crystal clear!! I was amazed. This was shot just after the confirmed kill of a harbour seal and during the food sharing process. What a way to start the season! Take care Susan!

Transient Orca Powell River

Transient Orca are spending more time again close to Myrtle Rocks, just south of Powell River. This is the same group of 8 to 10 whales including the two calves, T02C and T20 that's been close to Powell River for most of April. There are lots of seals and sea lions in the area, so plenty to eat. Also below are some reports of Pacific White Sided Dolphins and Dall's Porpoise.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Transient Orca – Killer Whales

April 28:
7:40 am A call came in from Steve Grover that there were Orca just off the ferry terminal in Powell River heading Southward. They always seem to be behind a large tree that blocks my view in that direction! Once they cleared that tree, they started to breach, spy hop and do some great tail lobs. I could identify T02C immediately and saw the two calves porpoising close by. With all the birds above, I assume they were on some food. A couple more spy hops, breaches and tail lobs and they carried on towards Grief Point.
Susan Mackay – Thanks Steve!

April 28:
10:30 am Taking their time, the Orca made it past Myrtle Rocks and continued heading South towards Black (Albion) Point and Lang Bay. No amount of activity.
Bill Taylor, Powell River

April 28:
Prior to that, they had stopped off Myrtle Rocks and spent some more time Breaching, Spy Hopping and splashing about.
Holly Roy, Powell River

April 28:
4:15 pm Pod of Orca just off Black (Albion) Point heading Northward towards Myrtle Rocks and Powell River. Two calves in the group close to females.
Nina Falls, Powell River

April 28:
Around 4:30 or 5 pm: Thanks again for the call today, we really enjoyed seeing the orca. I tried to get some photos of their return trip (heading Northward). They were further off shore and doing long dives and milling around, so I guess they were feeding. No good show on the second viewing.
Holly Roy, Powell River

9 pm Just getting too dark out there, but the Transients have not been spotted out in front of Powell River yet, so they may be holding close to Myrtle Rocks. Keep your eyes open!
Susan MacKay

April 27:
10:55 am Whales off Brown's Bay, by Campbell River. No direction given and no response to repeated calls for clarification.
Vessel, Possibly a tug boat, announced over the radio.

April 23:
Morning Susan, Just to report a sighting of about seven orca at Myrtle Rocks this morning at 7:45 am. They were heading south , taking long, long dives. What a great sight to wake up to! Regards,
Holly Roy, Powell River

April 23:
8:30 am At least 6, maybe more, Orca including 3 larger dorsals and at least one small calf tight together heading Southward. Between Myrtle Rocks and Black (Albion) Point, south of town.
Bill Taylor, Powell River

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

April 23:
Around noon a large group of Dolphins headed West off the bottom of Savary Island. They seemed to be really moving – lots of white water.
Lesley and Neil Roberts, Savary Island

April 20:
4:30 pm around 60+ Pacific White Sided Dolphins quickly moving Northward towards Myrtle Rocks.
Bill Taylor, Powell River

April 13:
While camping by Dinner Rock, south of Lund, we saw some dolphins.
Ed Klassen, Powell River

Dall's Porpoise

April 22:
10 am till close to 11 am 3 Dall's Porpoise were by Keefer Rock, between Savary and Hernando Islands.

Lots of Killer Whales and Dolphins

Transient (meat eating) Orca, Pacific White Sided Dolphins and a large group of Dall's Porpoises from Powell River to Savary Island today, and Campbell River Orca yesterday. Lots of activity after our long dry spell. Nice to have some of the 'regular' Savary snowbirds back to assist with Sightings reports. Our area is one of the larger expanses of water to watch, so the more eyes looking, the better the reports. Thank you all. Keep looking and those reports coming in!
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Transient Orca – Killer Whales

April 20:

6:40 pm 4 Orca by April Point, across from Campbell River, heading Northward. One big fin (male). Reports came in from Laura to Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys and also Jack Springer, Campbell River Whale Watching

April 21:

2:40 pm Just sitting on our deck watching 4 to 6 Orca cavorting and milling about out in front of the Meadows on Savary Island. (Southwest side of Savary Island looking towards Grant's Reef). No direction and have been there for a bit.
Lesley Roberts, Savary Island

3 pm Lesley called us to look for the Orca in front of our place.
Dee Ingraham, Savary Island

4:18 pm After a short search for them, Aaron, Campbell River Whale Watching found the Whales still in the same area. There were at least 8 Orca in total with T02C and one Sprouter (young male whose dorsal is growing to it's adult size) and possibly another male off in the distant. The two groups of around 4 each joined together. 2 very young calves still tinged with orange were cavorting (see Garry Henkel's photo below). They were resting, spyhopping and very slowly working their way towards the green buoy marking the end of Mystery Reef and the mainland. By 5:30 pm when Aaron left them, the Orca were still between Savary and Grant's Reef. Reports were received over the radio from Aaron 'as it happened' and they never did show up closer to the mainland by dark – SM.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

April 21:

10:40 am Call came in that around 50 Pacific White Sided Dolphins were very tight into shore by Grief Point heading towards Westview, Powell River.
Joan Treen, Powell River

11 am The dolphins were back and forth in front of Powell River feeding with a couple of sea lions in the mix. An eagle was swooping to pick up some of the herring (assumed) that they were chasing up while a flock of Snow Geese flew over them heading North. There was one dolphin I spotted that looked like it had a yellow streak on it which is a distinguishing feature of a Common Dolphin, but watching from shore, I could not confirm this. The Dolphins were not interested in playing with any of the ferries or boats in the area, but continued to forage back and forth from the ferry terminal to Grief Point. I last saw them back in front of the ferry terminal at 1:30 pm, then they disappeared. With the above Transient (meat eating) Orca reports, if they heard the whales, it explains their disappearance.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Dall's Porpoise

April 20:

10 am 3 Dall's Porpoise were out by Keefer Rock, between Savary and Hernando Islands.
Dee Ingraham, Savary Island

April 21:

Between 5 and 7 pm there were numerous Dall's Porpoise spread out between Savary and Hernando Islands. Estimated number would easily be around 20 of them and they were still visible on returning to Savary from Keefer Rock area. At one point there were 6 on one side of the boat and another eight on the other.

Whale Sightings Reports

A few Whale sighting reports below, but it's been very quiet in the northern part of Georgia Strait. Reports have it that at least some of the Transient Killer Whales we had close to Powell River have gone out West past the Port McNeill / Sointula area, while some were still being spotted down by Whidbey Island off the Olympic Penninsula in the US. Keep your eyes open, they may still just pop up to surprise us.

April 12:

Between 12noon and 2pm on April 12th, we saw about 20 Killer Whales playing. they came by our boat within 15 feet. They were Spyhoping splashing about for the first hour. Later when we went to the North side of the Island they started to Breach. We saw 6 breaches in about 30 seconds. they continued to swim about and around our boat... At one time we had Orcas on all sides of the boat. At one time we saw 8 fins out of the water at the same time. We do not know how many whales were there we only guessed by seeing whales out each side that we could count 20.

Lots of Transient Orca

Transient (meat eating) Orca are hanging around between Jervis Inlet and Powell River – at least in the past few days. They have been very elusive though, being spotted then disappearing. A few Harbour Porpoises also have been seen. Reports and a photo from today's encounter below.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Transient Orca – Killer Whales

April 10:
10:45 am a call came in that 8 to 10 Orca were very slowly headed Northward towards Powell River from just North of Black Point (also known as Albion Point). No large male dorsals were spotted. They were zig zagging back and forth between Texada Island and the mainland. There were some sea lions tight to the mainland shore heading South.
Bill Taylor

After a few calls to find out if they had maybe turned again, at 1:40 pm they finally showed up tight to the Texada shore across from Westview, Powell River. I watched them as they appeared to have a snack where numerous Harbour Seals have been hauled out on the rocks. They slowly turned back towards Grief Point (Powell River) and around 2:45 pm I caught up to them with the skiff. They were very spread out in smaller groups that were resting, milling about and a couple of calves were playfully splashing about all just off of Myrtle Rocks. With it being so calm and no traffic, I managed to hear some wonderfully clear communication (vocals) and echolocation amongst the group of around 10 to 16 Orca. Garry Henkel of Aboriginal Journeys joined me with his tour all the way from Campbell River. Our two boats enjoyed the show slowly Southward till we were just below Brew Bay. We watched the whales continue towards Scotch Fir Point till around 5:10 pm.

8:50 am 4 Orca including one large male Northbound towards Powell River from between Myrtle Rocks and Albion Point. Moving slowly, then picked up the pace.

9 am 4 to 6 Orca including 2 large males and a calf just passing Myrtle Rocks heading Northward moving at a steady pace.

Harbour Porpoises

April 8:
(afternoon) A few Harbour Porpoises were spotted between Savary and Hernando Islands – just off Baker Pass.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

Correction:
Photo posted April 3 titled Minke Whale in Mexico by Janice Parker was actually a Brydes Whale. They are not seen very often in the North Pacific. They were hunted by whalers out of Coal Harbour up to the 1960's. My apologies for any confusion. SM

Warm greetings: I've just joined your site to report seeing 3 or 4 Dolphins this evening at 7:20 frolicking and playing quite close in at Davis Bay. They slowly headed north towards Sechelt and two of us got a thrill watching them. Due to sun set light we could not see their colouring. Thanks for the opportunity to report these wonderful animals.

Delayed Sightings Reports

Orca, Dolphins, Grey Whales and Humpbacks. After my computer failure, I'm back on line with the sightings reports over the past week. This new system is not quite set up for the photo editing required to post, but I have managed to include a few smaller ones that have been submitted. The Cetaceans are coming back to our area!

Below this more current report, you'll find the report that was about to be posted when my system totally failed.

Humpback Whale Tail Flukes – Mexico

Grey Whales

April 1:
5:30 pm 2 Grey Whales from around 5pm. I thought I'd seen something, but every time I grabbed the binoculars, I saw nothing or a couple of sea lions. Finally I managed to catch one of the two whales lifting it's head high enough as it blew and took a breath to see clearly that it was a Grey Whale. The two were between Texada Island and Westview, Powell River heading Northward. I last saw their blows heading NW towards Vancouver Island around 6:45 pm. Unusual to see them on this side of the strait.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Orca – Killer Whales

April 1:
Orcas Northbound by Campbell River at 6 pm. Apparently some at Menzies Bay, near Seymour Narrows now. Not sure how many. I'll text you if I get a number of Orca at Menzies. Not sure if we had 2 groups here or just one – seems pretty quick for them to get to the Narrows in 1 hour.
Later info: Sounds like the number of Orcas Northbound past Campbell River at 6pm was 4 to 6. Not sure about Menzies Bay numbers yet.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

April 2:
Sounds like there were between 10 to 15 Orca in Menzies Bay last night (April 1). Just milling about. Lots of seals in there – unusual.
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys

Note: Will post some of the Menzie Bay Orca photos from Jack Springer, CR Whale Watching as soon as possible. Susan

Delayed Report to March 31, 2012:

Hundreds of Dolphins and Orca too!

After so few sightings on the Mainland side of the Sunshine Coast, it was great to hear of the Pacific White Sided Dolphins and then some Orca by Powell River.
Susan MacKay, Whales and Dolphins BC

Pacific White Sided Dolphins

March 30:
11:20 am a call came in that there were Hundreds of fast moving Pacific White Sided Dolphins between Black Point and Myrtle Rocks heading Northward towards Powell River. The ocean was a massive foaming boil from their fast maneuvers. They just seemed to disappear.
Bill Taylor

Orca – Probably Transients

March 30:
3:45 pm Three Orca two large dorsals and one small one were very slowly moving Northward right where the Dolphins (above) had been. They were doing long dives and just taking their time.
Bill Taylor

March 30:
Hi Susan, Just spotted ( 4:10 pm ) about 8 orca of all sizes coming north up the middle of the Malaspina Strait past Myrtle Rocks. They were rolling and diving and tail slapping and one breach. Too far away for a photo unfortunately. Regards,
Holly Roy

Just to let you all know, I had intermittently scanned the waters in front of Powell River, as well as getting a few neigbours to scan also, and no-one reported seeing the Dolphins or the Orca in front of Powell River or towards Lund. There are reports of more Sea Lions moving into the area, which would attract Transient Orca. Keep your eyes open all – they're out there.
